replace working water pump, high miles?

Hi, just looking for some advice

I have a 1999 Corolla, with around 160.000
miles on it, just passed inspection, luckily I had
a evac error code just days before I was due,
replaced all sv vacuum hoses, cleaned connector,
in the back, which seems to have fixed it.

I was just thinking, the water pump and alternator
just to mention a few are all original, should I replace
the water pump now at least? it seems like the only
component that if, it goes, could very easily damage
the motor, my wife drives it sometimes and would most
likely not pay attention to the gauge if something went
wrong. also is the alternator way over due as well?

the car runs very good right now, just looking for some
pointers to help it stay that way.

What would you do? in this case, or any idea on anything
else I should be thinking about replacing in advance?

Thanks
Ed

As long as you've been staying on top of the coolant flushes, should not have to be worried about the waterpump now. One of those wait until it fails sort of thing.

Same with the alternator - as long as you stayed on top of the battery condition (trying not to charge a dead battery, etc.) - unless something happened to the diodes, voltage regulator, or bearing - not much to go wrong with the alternator.

You could try and proactively replace parts - but then you have the possibility that the replacement part is inferior to the original one. There are quite a few owners with more miles that have all the OEM parts (mine is at 185K miles, all original accessories). Granted parts won't last forever, but with timely maintenance, will last a heck of a long time. Myself, I won't start worrying until I get much past 200K -250K miles.

I'd leave them as is.

The only major accessory I've had to replace is the starter, which started acting up at 120k miles. I only had to buy new solenoid contacts and was able remanufacture it myself for about 20 bucks.
