USA 2002 Corolla PCV valve location?

I've searched for this, both under the hood and in the forums here, and not been able to find it.

AutoZone used to have some helpful diagrams for locating stuff like this, but I looked at their site and all I find now is unusable diagrams that are so tiny I cant even read them, and don't see PCV there anyway.

I was told this MAY be the answer to my massive oil consumption problems. We got the car in April last year with 114k miles and it has used various amounts of oil since. ( 138k miles now ) No blue smoke, it passes emissions, and runs fine, and no leakage evident anywhere - even had the mechanic check around the engine, nada.

But sometimes it uses a quart every 1000 miles, sometimes 800 miles, sometimes 600 miles. ( no rhyme or reason? I've heard that the PCV can do that, with differences between more or less city / highway driving? ) Cant put my finger on why that varies so much, but some are suspecting the PCV valve.

We don't want to just pass this on to someone else, by selling the car, we'd like to fix it, but cant afford an engine rebuild. But the PCV costs under $10 and if it MIGHT fix it, it's worth a TRY.

So WHERE is the valve?

Please?

The PCV is at the back right corner of the engine (near the spark plugs):

If I recall, on your model it unscrews from the valve cover. Also, you should replace the plastic grommet as well, as they leak too. You will probably need two needle nose pliers to get a grip on it and pull it out.

As for the oil consumption issue, most of this generation car have similar issues. Here are the usual suspects:
- pcv valve/grommet
- valve cover gasket
- timing chain tensioner o-ring
- stuck piston rings

All but the piston rings can be replaced within an hour or so with basic tools.

2002 corolla's PCV valve is threaded in, no rubber grommet. (17mm I think, it's been years since I messed with it).

Ok, O'Reilly got two parts in for me, to try replacing the PCV in this 02 Corolla, both had different threads. So I took the old one out myself, which was VERY difficult - it was REALLY tight in there. We got the car with 114k miles and now it has 138k miles and the "excessive oil usage" has gradually gotten worse. I asked my mechanic if he checked the PCV and he said "yes" but now I'm wondering HOW? This thing looks all sludged up.

Yes it moves, but dully, not crisply like a new one. And it only costs $7 so why would the mechanic even hesitate to replace it?

The replacement I wound up getting was a MicroGard PCV 406 which I HOPE is the right one. It fits anyway, and the car runs. There isn't any serious need to replace this with a Toyota part, is there?

Then when I had the top cover off the engine, it seems to be missing a stud and this thing was dangling over the side, as if it was supposed to be mounted where the missing stud is. Does anyone know what this is? It comes from the wiring harness and is apparently meant to be solidly grounded? The PCV is shown to the lower right of it, on the drivers side top of the engine.
