Gas Tank Modification

Hey everyone, I just had a thought and decided to see what everyone else thought about it. A little background first though, I have a 02 Corolla LE with 164,XXX miles on it. One of the many things I really like about it is that with the 5 speed transmission I can get right around 37-38 MPG, which works out to around 400 miles per tank of gas! (I have done over 400 miles on a tank before.) My question is do you think it would be possible to put in a larger fuel tank to extend the range of the vehicle? Extending the range of the corolla to 600 maybe even 700 miles! Which I think would be very nice for those long drives that these cars are so good for.

Let me know your thoughts and any suggestions anyone has.

Given the tight amount of space already down there, and trying not to screw up the EVAP system. Best option is to add an auxiliary tank to the trunk to stretch out the range. Generally mounted in the trunk and mechanically switched. Pretty common on larger trucks and SUVs - more gas for towing and longer cruising range.

Also keep in mind that you will also add a non-trivial amount of weight to the car. Gas weighs about 6lbs per gallon + all the extra weight the larger or auxiliary tank, hoses, valves, etc. A matter of diminishing returns, sure you'll carry more gas with you, but also make the engine work harder as it has to drag all that extra weight along as well. Overall fuel economy, and not to mention vehicle handing. will likely suffer. Also have to check with local rules as well - some places will not allow you to register the car for highway use if you modify it in this manner. You can only guess at the issue of carrying more fuel that could potentially leak out / catch your car and others in a fire in the event of a collision.

As being able to do it, it is completely doable project - but if it makes sense or is cost effective/worthwhile? Hard to say -depends on how you drive the car, where you drive the car, etc. In a truck, this would make more sense - more options to add additional fuel, higher capacity fuel tanks, tank shields, etc.

Thanks Fishexpo for your opinion. There is no doubt that the added fuel and fuel systems would add weight, obviously decreasing your fuel mileage. You are 100% right about the fuel tank being very tightly tucked under the car, so there isn't much flexibility in that department. Fuel tank in the trunk is about the only other option as you suggested. Just me thinking, wanted others opinions. Thanks!
