Question Double DIN Storage Compartment

Alright, so I have a 98 rolla.
I want to take the single din out and make that a storage compartment, and use the existing storage compartment for a double din use.

My question is, is that there aren't really useful tip on how to do this.
As I don't want to mess anything up.

The the existing cord for the adapter long enough to re-route to that area?
Is there any specific dash kit that would make it easier just to slide in the storage compartment area, and mount it safely?

Or would you suggest that I get a flip down or up screen for single din, and just use the original spot?

Any pictures of someone who has already done this would be much appreciated.
Tips, suggestions... etc. Please help me.

The storage box spot will fit any standard double DIN unit, no adapter required, except that place is very low and may be less convenient to operate, with the shifter in the way. Any plug&play harness, soldered to the wires from the unit itself, should make it long enough to reach down there.

Thank you.

Have you seen any pictures of this done before?
Mounting should be easy then? I don't need the merchandise rattling around in there. Haha.

I did that to mine a couple weeks ago. When you take the trim panel off it looks just like the brackets in the single DIN spot above it. Four screws and the box pops out. Just take the brackets off the box and put them on the head unit. There are even screw holes that line up with standard holes in most head units. If you have an aftermarket wiring harness already on the top, then just tap into those. There is plenty of room behind the climate control to put wires between the two. Put the trim back on and it should look good. Mine looked great, the depth matched up good with the trim. I thought it was going the be a lot of work to mod anything in there. It was like a gift from god when I took the trim off and saw the bracket and the sizes were the same.

I am wanting to do this to my sons 98 Corolla.

what name brand radio did you use... also pictures would be awesome.

Another question is, where can I get a kit (and whats the part number) to put a single din pocket in the factory radio location?

I'll give it a try posting pics. Hope for the best.
I don't think you need a kit to make the top a storage box. A standard single DIN box that they sell all over the place to use in other vehicles with aftermarket systems. All you should need is the box itself. I used a pioneer but it can fit any one.

Doesn't look like the pictured worked try this: http://s1085.photobucket.com/albums/...=1314969135596

That looks pretty good. You can post that picture by copying that link and then when you make a post click the yellow icon that has mountains in it. Then past the copied link into the box.

The pic should show up in the post then.

I posted it for you.... 8-)

Thats what I did. Figures, go vista, go vista, go vista. It is hard to use whatever is down there due to the shifter in the way. If you want to use it, go with something that doesn't require a lot of adjusting, like a EQ, or maybe gauges, they sell those three gauge holders that fit into the single din spot. Add some oil PSI and Volts. I put a 7" LCD screen down there and I have to shift out of park to open it up.

This car is for my son thats 14 now, he wants that app radio that Pioneer has. He bought his own iPhone 4 and plans to upgrade to a iPhone 5.

I keep telling him the pioneer appradio has some issues. and since its a touch screen it will be a PIA to operate down there.
