Cold air intake help

i own a 2000 corolla, ive searched the site for these questions but im confused. i want a little gain for my car, but have heard its bad for the intake to be in the engine bay but its bad if the filter gets wet. My car has the maf sensor and if i biuld my own what do i do with the sensor and the vaccume line going into the oem box. a little insight on this topic would be great

The car will not run without the MAF or the vacuum points along the intake, so you'll need to replicate those in your build. The projection (how deep the MAF extends into the air stream) and the overall diameter of the piping will be critical. Otherwise, you can through a CEL, which will cause the car to run in a degraded mode to protect itself.

As for getting the filter wet being bad - depends on the extent of "how" wet. If the filter end gets completely submerged under water - that would be a bad thing. Would hydro-lock the engine in the heartbeat there. If it gets a little wet or get water splashed on it, no big deal.

Also note that gains will be minimal for this mod. You might get better throttle response and much greater intake sound (since you will be bypassing the resonator in the OEM system) - but don't expect much more than a 3-5 HP gain, tops.

All a cold air intake will do to your car is make it louder. You will not see any power gain. Any "gain" you get will be in your head.

what brand intake is that?
i was going to attempt to build my own system this weekend, route the tubing by the fender and put the filter there so it would catch some cold air. if i build my own what can i get to be able to still use the maf sensor and vaccume? how can i avoid the cel?

Just don't go over 2.5" piping and make sure there's no vacuum leak when customizing a hole for the vacuum line and for the maf just buy a maf adapter pipe/tube.
