Po 446b

So I just had my engine scanned since the light came on and it came up as PO 446B.

How do you find out what these codes mean exactly?

I just copied these DTCs from the corolla's repair manual. Code P0446 has the same trouble areas as P0441.

P0441 - evaporative emission control system incorrect purge flow
P0446 - evaporative emission control system vent control malfunction

Well I had a new vent installed. Hopefully the light stays off on this matter.

It is more than likely the Evap Vacuum Switching Valve on the canister under the rear of the car. Especially in northern climates, the internal "piston" rusts and ceases to move. That valve can be removed and the internals can be de-rusted with a lot of patience if the exterior metal tabs holding it together are not totally rusted away. Or you can get a clean used one on Ebay for about $25-$30 and just replace it. Last time I checked you could not get a new one from Toyota. They will only sell you the whole canister for major $$$$$. Nice of them to be so customer friendly !!

To those who may be thinking of following pchalpin's advice about "de-rusting" the valve, yes it can be done but not recommended unless you cannot afford a new one. The bolt that holds the valve in place is difficult to reach and the repaired valve will never be reliable.

It seems that the Evap components are significantly different for different model years, so always be sure that you know exactly what's on your car before ordering any parts. My daughter's '98 Corolla has a fuel pressure sensor next to the canister and 2 dealers I've called cannot find the part in their database, yet it is available online from oem and generic auto parts suppliers. It may be that the VSV your dealer is referring to isn't even what is in the car.
