I am wondering what the consensus is on fuel mileage for everyone here?
my corolla seems to not be doing as well when I compare it to my old first corolla that I had a few years ago... what kind of fuel mileage is everyone here getting
Filled her up, i was doing some 70-80 driving on the freeway and going up mountains and hills around 70 (running late for a meeting) and i had 350 miles right before my refill light came on. Going from Stockton ca to Monterrey ca, mostly freeway but i also did stop n go through the city. the next day in the city i drove it another 40 miles before i fueled up
thats about 30mpg, i would have done better if i was driving around 60...

What mileage were you expecting? Comparing two different car's is always a loaded question - many factors come into play in terms of fuel economy.
What is the car getting now? Mostly city, highway, or a mix? Short or lengthy commute? How's the maintenance history on the car? Tire pressures correct, alignment good? Driving differences between the models, etc.?
As for my 2002 + 4-speed auto with ~185K original miles (all mine). I'll get anywhere from low 30's to low 40's - depending on distance, ave speed, and ambient conditions. Lowest I've ever got with the car was low to mid-20s (from my 14+ hour commute over 30 miles from that Feb 2011 thunder-snow storm) to a maximum of almost 47MPG when I took it on its first 300+ mile road trip (that was even with 70MPH, 100% A/C, three passengers + luggage!).
Compared to our new Matrix XRS with the 2.4L engine + 5-speed auto - if the wife drives, might be between 18-21MPG on her 15 mile commute. If I drive the car over the same route - I'll get about 5MPG more (23-26MPG). On road trips, we just tickle 30-31MPG.
With my 98, I average 35mpg with mixed city/highway And the highest I've gotten is 46mpg w/ a modded engine mind you on a 200+ mile roundtrip from Philly to Baltimore. This car is allergic to gas pumps.
I've been getting about 48 MPIG / 40 MPG in my wife's '01, over 1 hour to work, mostly highway but lots of lights through the city, so some stop and go. Worse traffic on that part = worse milage obviously. Top speed on this commute is 105 KPH (65 mph) max, car has 5 spd tranny and now at 256,000 Km.

I average 30 mpg with a mix of city and highway(mostly city). The highest recorded was 39mpg on a trip from Atlanta to Orlando.
99 Corolla CE 4spd auto with 230,000miles
two different cars? same exact model car... same year, same model. mileage seems very much different.
Which car - model and year, are you comparing? Are they the 1998-1999 pre-VVTi variants or the 2000-2002 VVTi models? Same transaxles? Same mileage? What about repair/maintenance history? Tires and tire pressures?
Lots of factors can influence fuel economy. Even slight changes can have a marked impact in fuel economy. You can have to identically equipped cars, same mileage, same year, same transaxle, same maintenance history - change tire pressure on one by 10PSI (ie, go from 35PSI to 25PSI) - can easily see 3% or more drop in overall MPG. Alignment slightly off, running with more electrical accessories, even running DRLs will pull mileage down a few percent.
If you are talking a huge mileage difference - 20-25% difference and the two cars are more or less alike - then I would suspect an issue like dragging brakes, exhaust/induction/ignition issue from poor maintenance, and/or dying upstream O2 sensor.
The 2000 CE 5-spd manual w/115k that my son wrecked got 34-36 mixed, and over 40 highway.
The 2000 VE 3-spd auto w/145k I have now gets 26-28 same driving, and a little over 30 highway at ~65. Push it faster that and I have to start measuring miles per quart of oil as well.
