You used the car for about 2 weeks before without any problems? No unusual sounds?

Maybe something dropped/fell into the engine. You had the valve cover off - maybe something fell into the engine (tools / some sand got in there). Sat in there for a while before it destroyed something / sand slowly damaged the engine.

Did you tighten all the bolts etc with the right torque? I don't know how critical the torque is with the valve cover, I know that if you don't torque the head right, it can warp / crack, also causing the problems you describe (bogging and oil burning).

Maybe just bad luck, and something broke, having nothing in common with the valve cover.

Where did you get the gasket from? Did it come with the little replacement rubber donuts for the two long screws in the middle of the valve cover? Did it have the separate spark plug tube o-rings or was it moulded with the rest of the gasket?

Was it like this:

Or this:

Made sure the plugs were OK before you put them back in (torque correctly, doesn't leak)?
Made sure the Coil-on-plug packs were seated well on top of the plugs?
Connector(s) made its way loose?

Lost on the bolts for the coil pack? That shouldn't cause any oil problems. If you lost one of the bolts for the valvecover itself, then that is a different story.
