1998 Corolla Manual: Where is pilot bushing?

Hello all,

I'm in the process of replacing a couple gears in my tranny, and decided to do the clutch while it's out. My clutch kit came with a pilot bushing, but I cannot figure out where it goes, or where the old one is! The factory service manual doesn't show it on any diagrams (that i can find) and Autozone's job diagram shows that it should be near the flywheel? I've seen pictures of them being inside of the flywheel, but this bushing won't fit inside my flywheel, and even if it could, I don't see how it would do any good because the diameter is much smaller than the input shaft of the transmission. I'm guessing that mine just doesn't need a pilot bushing, but want to make sure.

Help please?

Thank you!

Although I've never had one of these specific trannies apart, the pilot bushing (or bearing) is going to be located either within the flywheel or end of the crankshaft. Its purpose is for the input shaft to rotate on. You're going to have a pilot bearing, since these cars don't use modular clutches.

Hmmm... Well it wasn't in the flywheel, and it wasn't on the end of the input shaft. I don't see any reason why there would need to be a bearing for it to turn on other than the two bearings in the transmission case that it turns on... the end of the shaft goes straight into the clutch... how would a bearing there do anything?

It just supports the tip of the input shaft and gives it a wear surface to spin on.

My Exedy stage 1 kit has a pilot bushing too. The shop that installed the kit didn't install it. The previous OEM kit has no pilot bushing. So i'd say that part is simply not applicable.

My '06 Tacoma does not have a pilot bearing or bushing, and no nose on the input shaft or bore in the crank / flywheel for one. I haven't had the tranny out of the 'rolla yet, but looking at the sketches and exploded view in the FSM it is the same design, so no bushing / bearing used.

Perhaps the clutch kit fits other applications, older models, ??? as well. Or it's the wrong kit?
Edit: it looks like Buurin answered this part.

did you try to see if bushing fits on your trans input shaft? a picture of ionput shaft would help if splines go all the way to the end then there isn't any need for a pilot bushing. they usually don't need replacement

Outside diameter of new pilot bushing is about the size of the input shaft. No way it would fit.
