Overheated
Hello everyone. My girlfriend owns a 2000 Corolla LE ATX with 150K on it, and I of course, being a mechanic, do all the work to it. Just last night the PS pump seized up and snapped the belt. Little did I know, the water pump on these cars are driven by the serpentine belt (opposed to the timing belt like in my 3000GT). The car was driven 20-30 miles without the belt. I have no idea how I didn't notice the temp gauge all that time, but I finally noticed it completely pegged out.
Needless to say, I found a bypass belt to use for the time being until I get around the replacing the PS pump. My biggest concern now is the engine and transmission. The coolant level was low, I'm hoping just from it boiling out of the reservoir and not being burnt. I refilled the radiator the rest of the way and the temp is right where it should be. I'm going to keep an eye on it for the next few days.
How bulletproof are the all aluminum engines? How easy is it to warp the block, heads, and destroy the head gasket? So far I'm getting zero smoke from the tailpipe, so that's a good sign. Next step will obviously be a leakdown, but I can't do it at the moment.
