I recently just turned 16, and I've been into all sorts of hobbies, my biggest being the odds and ends of robotics. Considering I will soon have my drivers license, I thought it would be a good time to start getting into the mechanics of cars. For my birthday, I received a fully stock 99' Corolla, with the exception of a remote start installed.
Being a male 16 year old, I am far from the stereotypical teenager. Unfortunately, my 120hp 1.8L Corolla doesn't exactly meet my optimistic standards. Excluding the aesthetic upgrades (I don't think I'll need a wing considering that in it's current state, it will probably never reach 150kmph ), I'm looking for pure performance. Are there many "beginner" upgrades for my 99' that will increase the hp a fair amount?
I realise that this is probably a question you get often. Thanks!

Well remote start means you probably have a autotragic but Do a search on the Intake Manifold Swap which really is the only thing you can do to make some power sans the usual intake/exhaust.
Okay, thanks.
Also, about the exhaust. There aren't all that many automotive shops where I lived, so I headed to my local canadian tire (yes I know) and looked at a few exhausts. I found the Ractive Fireball exhaust among a few others. Is it possible to fit on the 99'?

I love that style, I have a tip just like it
I'll look into it, thanks for the help.
As a side note, what kind of exterior upgrades do you recommend?
I've got my eyes on a few scoops, but I'll have to angle grind a few holes in the bonnet if I want them to do anything.
It's an 8th gen Corolla... there isn't anything you can do to increase the horsepower in any meaningful way short of spending $$$$ to put another engine in the car.
If you want speed you should sell the car and buy something else.

That is very true, but A: I'm not looking for a full blown mustang, just something that can do a little better speed than it can now, and B: I don't have the money and I'd rather not sell the car.
Headers. They are the key to any exhaust upgrade. Mufflers just change the noise (for better or worse) and torque bands. You can go for a Cold Air Intake (which will possibly give you a ~10-15 HP increase).
I know it aint much, but there is very little you can hope for if you are strapped for cash. A drop in air filter (K&N) runs for $30-50 (+1HP), CAI ~$200, mufflers are cheap (dont buy the catback exhaust systems if you haven't researched because they really mess up the torque bands and screw with shifting), and headers (which usually is paired with exhaust changes but take forever to install yourself if you dont know what you are doing; +2-7HP).
Now, if you dont want to be the ricer on your street, be picky about your muffler noise. If you want pure performance in corners, you can get aftermarket shocks/springs, swaybars, and/or strut towers. These will give you more feedback and control in turns while keeping the car as "planted" as it can, giving you the ability to drive like a champ while still driving kinda slow. (Sounds weird, but you will feel the affects than someone watching from the outside)
PS: if you haven't done so, change the oil, do a drain and refill of the Transmission Fluid (DO NOT DO A TRANSMISSION FLUSH OR YOU WILL REGRET IT), and if it hasn't been done (depending on mileage) swap out the spark plugs. That usually gives back around maybe 11 HP back at most.

Thanks for all the info, it was quite helpful!
Heading down to the local body shop soon to pick up the filter, already was intending to buy it
About the muffler, trust me, there are already about 10 ricers in my area, I'll have no trouble blending in if so desired
