Another Intake Question

Does anyone have any experience with any of these?

The Typhoon looks nice but it looks like you have to relocate the battery.

The link didn't work for me - but are you talking about the K&N Typhoon SR intake kit? If so, others were able to fit that in without any clearance issues. With the CAI setup - might have to wiggle the battery over to make enough room - some were able to install the intake w/ an OEM sized battery - others were not.

As for performance gains - minimal for our engines, unless you are heavily modded. Since your bypassing the resonator - the intake noise will be considerably amplified. Which could be a blessing or a curse - depending on a number of situations. SR intake and drop-in panel filter - would be equivalent, performance wise. CAI might get you a slight performance advantage - but depends on how the car is driven and where. A long intake pathway with long intake runner design can complicate the intake pulses - could either enhance or kill overall performance.

I'd only get it for looks and the louder intake noise - don't get it for performance, unless you modded the engine to take advantage of the extra air - many times, the stock airbox + free flow panel has shown to be the best bang for the buck. If you are running the 2ZZ-GE or 1ZZ-FE with an intake manifold / exhaust header upgrade - then I'd say definitely think about the aftermarket intake. For mostly stock - might just liken the chance of getting a CEL for lean running condition.

Currently what I'm running, until I decide to do something more drastic. But the 1ZZ-FE has proven to be pretty reliable for me - don't really feel like mucking things up when they are running well.

Hmm... Try going to www.nopi.com and search on intakes for a 2002 Corolla. They list about a dozen.

I already have a K&N Drop in. It definitely helps. I do not want a short-ram; I tried an Injen but the filter sits right over the exhaust manifold and just sucks hot air. I had it one for a grand total of 2 hours and took it back off.

I'll admit that looks are part of it. I make the import tuner show circuit so it would look nice under the hood. I don't care if I do not GAIN performance; I just don't want to LOSE performance.

As long as you stick with one of the well known brands and stick with an ice-box design or CAI - the likelyhood of losing power with this mod is greatly reduced. SRI - even from well known manufacturers - just by design, can get heat-soaked and loose power - well atleast until you start moving and the underhood temps start to fall close to ambient temps.

What do you mean "Ice Box"?

The ice-box intake variants place the filter side within a partition, separated from the rest of the engine bay. Helping to keep underhood temps from soaking the filter side with excessive amounts of heat. They are still mounted toward the front of the car, generally right by the high pressure area right by the grille opening. So it acts like a CAI setup, but have the overall package and length of a SRI.
