2001 Toyota Corolla failed inspection - 2 codes present

Hey all,

My car just failed for inspection, with the codes P0446 and P1349 present. The last time (2 years ago) my car failed for these SAME codes, the shop 'reset' the computer and cleared the codes, and passed me. Is this something I could do on my own? My friend mentioned something about disconnecting the battery, then completing a drive cycle. Could anyone elaborate on that? Thanks!

Yes, disconnecting and reconnecting battery is a way of resetting the codes. For a day or so will give a emission status of "not ready". The inspection folks will catch on to that, so wait a couple days, a few cold starts, 60+ miles. A few drive cycles. Code P1349 is a VVT oil pressure related issue usually caused by a dirty engine, but can be a bad oil control valve, its filter, or cam gear. Usually accompanied by lifter noise (sounds like a diesel). P0446 is an evaporative system code. Tough to figure out. That could also be a dirty fuel system or may be the Pressure Sensor Switching Valve near the charcoal canister, bad canister, or a few other things.

You have a while to resolve a rejection. Change your oil and filter. Use a synthetic (recommend Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w-30), add 2 bottles of techron complete fuel system concentrate to 2 consecutive tanks (1 per tank), see what happens over a couple weeks. If the lights don't go out, do the battery trick and get through inspection. After that, you should head to a mechanic.

PS. The Mobil 1 High Mileage oil is recommended because its the best cleaning oil I've tried. It isn't cheap. Cheapest at Walmart. You don't have to use it forever if you dont want to, but every so often you should. I do, just go longer with it to make up the cost.

I bought a scanner and I cleared the codes, now the only one coming back is the p1349. I clear them, it says no codes, but then it slowly comes back as I get around ~20 miles. Toyota quoted me $100 for a scan, plus "at least" $500 in labor to fix it. Other garages have just been stringing me along. Not really sure what to do at this point..
