Engine Misfire Code

I just rebuilt my 1zz-fe with new pistons that.....wait for it..... aren't burning oil!!
However im throwing a code for misfire. After disconnecting the battery and resetting the computer it will idle fine, but when you rev it hard it has a big lag and stutter before revving up. Also it will lunge back and forth and act like it's going to stall if you give it a ton of gas after the computer resets, but after about 10 mins of driving everything is fine.

Its been running fine for about a month now and idles great but is stilling giving me the code. It accelerates pretty smoothly but you can definitely feel its lacking a little power and response.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Need a bit more info:

Which model year engine is this - 1998-1999 non-VVTi or the 2000+ VVTi variant?
What else did you do to the engine, aside from the pistons?

Same Corolla as yours, 2001 Corolla S 1.8 1zz-fe VVT-i.

New pistons, rings, bearings, replaced bent rod, head bolts, thermostat, water pump, gaskets, spark plugs, and clutch.

Gotcha.

Hmm - have you tried the easy stuff - pulled the plugs and read them? I always double check the gap - even on the iridium ones. As long as you are careful, you won't crack the brittle electrode tips. I've also had insulators that came loose from the threaded body, intermittent connection from the coil on plug unit, intermittent connection from the wiring harness, ground loops or missing chassis ground, etc.

Tried swapped the coils from cylinder to cylinder, to see if the misfire follows the coil? Though that is assuming you have a specific cylinder misfire code, may still be useful in the case of random misfires.

Damaged connections or connections that didn't seat 100%? I know that if the coolant temp sensor can trip a misfire condition, if the connection is noisy or intermittent.

Is the cam timing correct? Did you for sure get all the timing marks on the chain and sprockets lined up correctly?

Glad to hear you went through it and fix the oil burning issue!!

Took it to get scoped again and this time it gave me "running lean". It's whistled since the day i bought it and Iv checked for vacuum leaks before with no success, but the code really ticked me off so i checked again this time with the plastic valve cover cover off (duh) and by wiggling one of the fuel injectors i was able to change the sound of the whistle. So i sprayed some carb cleaner near the injector and VIOLA, it died! So i ran out and replaced all of my injector seals and it seems to be running much smoother.

It was a little laggy right after hooked the battery up and drove it but i think this is normal for a car that relies so much on a computer right? How long does it usually take to re-map?

Thank you all for your quick replies and helpful info.

I was guessing intake manifold gasket was leaking...A day or so and it will re-learn.

I was just getting ready to post check your injectors! I had a cracked one on my 2000 corolla I had a terrible miss , through the whole rpm range . It would do 70 mph downhill ! I went through A whole can of carb spray looking for vacuum leaks . I was getting a po302 code misfire cyl 2, and random misfires, a buddy told me to swap # 2 with another injector when i pulled # 2 i noticed a crack . Went to a u pull yard today bought 2 injectors for $20 bucks now she sounds and runs perfect .
