2001 Prizm engine

I just bought a 2001 Prizm 3 speed automatic with 70K miles on the odometer. Thinking that Toyota engine will last at least 200K I was totally wrong. The engine is burning oil, I have to add about a quart of oil every 700 or 800 miles. I need to overhaul the engine. On the timing chain cover there is a label marking N1ZZ-K85N. Is it the engine type? If so, what is the difference between N1ZZ-K85N AND 1ZZ-FE engine? Do you know any good website showing how to rebuild 8th generation engine?

Thanks for your help

Too bad you bought this car with the 3 speed. The original owner obviously wanted to get rid of it when they were probably advised about the oil issue

It's the 1ZZ-FE motor. I did a write up on the fix. Not a small project but hopefully this will help. Some people have had good luck with oil addatives too.

Bennie,

First, let me thank you for your nice pictures about the project. I read and reread your re-ring engine project. Quick question, I notice that you drill some hole in the oil groove of the piston, can you tell me how many hole did you drill per piston and I hope it did not affect the integrity of the piston. I think it is the best idea you should let Toyota know about your modification. Since you rebuilt the engine how many miles have you driven. Great job.

You're welcome Dodoman. First off, I can't take too much credit for the additional oil holes because, from what i've heard, this is exactly what Toyota did on the newer engines. I'm not sure if it started in 2003 or 2005. The pistons only had 4 holes originally. I enlarged those existing holes just about to the full with of the ring grove and added 2 more holes as well. So in the end there are now 6 larger holes per piston. based on the location of the holes I do not think this will make any notable difference in strength because the holes are not located near the wrist pin.

Bennie,

I have a check engine light code P0171 (system too lean Bank 1). Do you think because of the carbon deposit around the intake valve that is why I'm getting this error code. Need your input.

Thanks

Maybe the oil analysis may give you an idea.

P0171 almost always means a vacuum leak causing a lean fuel mixture. The most likely scenario is that you need to replace your intake manifold gasket. Should be a 1 hour replacement.

As other have stated, check for a vaccum leak, that's a likey cause. What year is your car? If it's a 2000 or newer it has a MAF sensor, try cleaning that too. That's also very likely

If your mileage has dropped big time I would suspect the upstream O2 sensor. When those go they think you are running lean & richen up the mixture to the point of 20mpg highway. I have not seen a P0171 code, or any code for this problem, but maybe I've caught it before it got that bad.

Hope that helps
