Parking Brake Light

Hey Guys/Girls,

Two days ago my parking break light seems to just turn on and off at random while driving. The parking break is not engaged so I'm not really sure what the problem is.

Any ideas on what would cause this? Just a computer error maybe?

Cheers.

Title fixed.

It's a brake... not a break.

There's a switch that gets depressed when you pull the parking brake lever. That switch on thing that triggers that light to come on, so the first thing to check is that it's adjusted properly (JUST barely touches the brake lever, not pushed in AT ALL when the lever is down) and isn't getting stuck. It's a very sensitive switch, so if it's not just-so, it'll trigger when you don't want it to.

A critical issue with your brake system, most likely the brake booster, may also cause this light to pop on. I don't know if it's the case in a Corolla, but I know when I had a brake line rupture in my Jeep a few years back, that light came on and required 450PSI in the line before it would shut off. A problem with the brake booster might also light that puppy up. Haven't had any brake problems in either of my Corollas (save for the master cylinders I replaced in both, they were wearing out, but not bad enough to trigger a trouble light), so I don't know if the light works similarly for these cars.

Check your brake fluid level. If it is topped up you probably have a float that is stuck or a bad electrical connection. Try unplugging the switch on the brake fluid reservoir. If it goes off clean the connector and make sure the float in the reservoir can move properly.

Good to know there were no expensive repairs involved!
