flushing the transmission?

i am about to buy a corolla with 75k 2001 S and the owner says he has flushed the transmission to where all the old one comes out and hes replaced the seals.

i thought flushing was bad for the transmission?

at audiforums people have taught me to never flush the tranny as it will ruin it. shoudl i continue with the purchase or will there be problems later on?

I have flushed a crap load of transmissions and never created a problem. If the transmission shifts good and everything seems fine I wouldn't worry about it.

Tranny flush

You omit the type of tranny. I recently purchased a '98 5 speed manual filled with auto trans fluid! Perhaps someone was confused or wanted to give it a flush?

so what is the difference between a flush and just a pan drop and oil change and filter?

i know the pan drop doesnt remove all the oil but ive also read its much safer for the tranny.

what do they do in a flush?

this is on a 01 corolla automatic

The difference is simply a 100% fluid change. Also you don't have to drop the pan to do a flush. I'm going to do a write up on a flush shortly here. to sum it up, disconnect a tranny line, start the car and let the transmission pump out the old fluid & replace it with new. Of course that is an over simplified explaination but you get the idea. It's great PM (preventative maint.)

I believe a pan drop only get's about 2.6qt. For a flush I usually use 2-3 gallons.

Pan drop on a 4 speed is a a hair under 4qt, a hair over if you pull the filter, as well.

Just drain and fill every other year, thats it! Almost a gallon. I get my fluid at the dealer. Because the Dex III is hard to find and because they give me a new little crush washer that's also hard to find. This may be important to the OP..anyone/everyone using Dex VI now that dex III is end of life?

Stick with D-III. The farthest I'd go is to use a DEX-III/IV fluid, never anything that didn't at least claim to be DEX-III. As long as you can still get it from a dealership, or find an aftermarket that conforms to the spec, use it. What it comes down to is the transmission was designed to work with the base oil and additives in DEX-III and using an ATF with a different base, more, less, or different additives, will, not might, WILL lead to excessive wear and premature failure.
