HELP! Car won't Rev past 3000rpms

I've got a check engine light and the car won't rev past 3000rpms. It will stutter violently when it gets to 3000rpms. The car still shifts and drives fine otherwise. 04 Matrix auto btw. It was running fine before fiddling with the amp and subwoofer. It's got an aftermarket intake too.

did you just install the intake? If so, it's probably your intake that is giving you the check engine light (CEL). There can be several things that can cause the CEL to come on. 1. You have improperly seated your mass air flow sensor(MAF) (the black thing that goes into the hole of the intake) 2. The mass air flow sensor is dirty (you need to take it out and clean it). 3. You might have broke the mass air flow sensor when you were installing it.

My first thought is the catalytic converter. When a cat breaks inside it can restrict the airflow, so at high revs the back pressure is very high. I wouldn't expect the power amp to be involved (the alternator can only load the engine just so much). An intake restriction might limit revs, such as a family of mice living in your air filter. There are also more serious failures that are possible: Valves opening and closing very late (slipped timing) will limit revs (actually had this happen on a 1980 Chevette when the timing belt slipped, drivable only in the highest gears, of course only on flat roads). On a Matrix I wonder if the sensor that controls timing advance could go? And of course a computer module failure can cause just about any problem like this.
Can you describe your symptoms in more detail? Does it sound good at idle? Does the engine character gradually change, or suddenly change at 3000? When you say it stutters, do you mean it sounds like popping, or feels like a shaking, or something else? Does it do the same thing if you put it in Neutral and rev it up?

From what your describing it does sound like a plugged up catalytic converter, but i doubt thats the problem unless you have tons of miles on it. Same goes for the timing belt, the car is to new to have belt problems. I would go with what Frank suggested. If you started having the problem right after hooking up the amp, then try dissconnecting the amp first. If that dosent work get it scanned to find out what code its throwing to cause the check engine light to come on. The Mass Airflow Sensor is another possibility. Easiest way to eliminate the air flow sensor is to unplug it and then start the car. If the computer dosent see a signal from the airflow sensor it will use a substitute value in its place based on other sensor readings. If it runs fine with the sensor unplugged, then the airflow sensor is your problem. If thats not it, keep in mind that it will probably also store a MAF sensor code since you had it unplugged.

check your vacuum lines. Get some Contact Cleaner form pep boys or autozone and TB cleaner. Disconnect the battery and disconnect the MAF sensor, spray the MAF w/ the contact cleaner and that's it don't use a tissue or q-tip and let it airdry. Same w/ the TB, w/ the battery still disconnected clean the TB as much as you can. Reconnect the batter w/ out the intake on and spray some TB cleaner in into the TB as it's idling but spray too much at one time just little increments. Throw everthing back on and double check to see if anything is outta place. You can go to Harbor Freight and pick up an OBDII scanner for like $45 bucks and it'll give you the code and it comes w/ a code book. After 4 times it scan it'll clear the CEL. The code will pinpoint what it is.

Is it just me or do most people here ask for help or advise and then completely ignore all the suggestions that were given. Sure...go ahead and change the MAF, but if it dosent work you just pissed away $100+ dollars....

I did do all of the above. The sensor is clean but still the problem exists. I asked on the same thing on matrixowners.com and they told me it was the maf sensor. I must've shocked the sensor when I was installing my amp. The fuse must've touched the cold air intake pipe creating a spark. Of course I tried everything before resorting to buying another maf sensor. Oh and the maf sensors going to only cost me $50.

maf sensor problem

I think I am getting the same thing happeneing to my carolla. I just recently replaced the air intake and at 3000rpm's the car acts like it is missing on like 2 cylinders. It sputters violently anytime it reaches 3000 rpms. Also it idles a little high. DId you get the new maf sensor and is so did it fix the problem?

The MAF is fried. A few days late and a few dollars short but you will need to replace it. Your car is probably operating in "limp" mode due to the MAF issue. When changing it, disconnect the neg terminal before installing it. Then install the new part. Before plugging the MAF back in, reconnect the neg terminal. Then plug in the MAF. If you plug in the MAF first, you risk shorting it again when you re-connect the neg terminal.

how does replacing the intake cause the MAF to fry?
If you aren't careful, when you reconnect the battery, any contact between the metal tool and the metal intake tube will short the MAF. You won't notice a spark or anything, just the car's inability to rev past 3K (limp mode). This incident has been well documented on another site that I am "forbidden" to mention. PM me for the link.

Maybe you're getting oil in the cylinders. Check your spark plugs and see what condition they're in. If even one is blown, or damaged you'll get problems like what you're getting.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen on Saturday

And it is totally the MAF. P0103. You fry those things without even trying. And it doesn't matter if you arc it against the intake, or just sent a surge through the system inadvertently somewhere else. The maf is fragile and you fry it. So, best advice I have heard, can't remember if it was this site, or MO, or the GenVibe, but some wise guy said, DISCONNECT the maf b4 touching either battery terminal... just do it. Yeah, you can be careful, and 9 times out of 10 you'll be cool, but they are just too easy to fry, so take them out of the circuit first thing.

Autozone and NAPA have them in stock at most of their stores, so if you are in a hurry and can't wait for mail order... go to the counter and pay the man.

BTW in limp mode, I could still do 65 on the expressway in 5th gear. That's not so bad, it just took a while to limp up to that speed.
