03 Corolla S guzzling too much gas

I've been driving my cousin's 2003 Corolla S for the past week and a half now and to me its burning WAY too much gas. I drove it from Dover Delaware to Dover New Jersey and the car burned 3/4's tank of gas at an average of 75mph with no hard accelerating. The trip was about 150 miles. Everytime I drive the car, I can literally see the gas hand dropping. It was burning 1/4 tank of gas for every 40-45 miles I drove. I drove the car 70 miles today on the highway today and it burned between 1/4 and 1/2 tank of gas. I make that same trip with my Altima all the time and after that same trip, my gas hand moves from over the full line to the full line. Is this normal fuel consumption for a Corolla ?? Maybe its just me because Im used to the 20 gallon tank in my Altima and the 18 gallon tank in my Camry. I just thought the Corolla's were excellent on gas but maybe I'm expecting too much being that the Corolla has a small gas tank and Im used to bigger tanks.

So, Corolla owner's. is this car burning too much gas or is that just normal ??

Thanks in advance

does it need a tune-up/air filter etc...? Was the gauge on the bottom half or top half?

^^My cousin got the car with 61k miles on it back in July and only 5k miles has been put on it since then. As for a tune-up, I don't know if that was ever performed.

My friend checked the tire pressure on it and everything was right.

How about posting some actual calculated mpg instead of whats you see via the fuel gauge. Try topping it off, drive it for how ever many miles, top it off again and see what it really used.

like 90% of bad gas mileage is because of driver habits... try driving like a granny, or if you dont like that, then dont complain
