Want to install Remote Keyless System

I have an 04 Corolla CE. It has manual door locks and windows. How hard would it be to install a remote keyless entry system and what would I need to do this? It's my girlfriend's car actually and she doesn't want any fancy alarm system but just a keyless entry system. I was also thinking about installing automatic windows on it later on. Any opinions and suggestions is appreciated. Thanks.

Thai

I did just that in my 2003 Tacoma. Bought it without power locks figuring that the truck is so small what's the big deal. I use it for work though and keep my toolcase on the passeger side. With so much opening the passenger door daily, the lock failed. So I decided to install power locks.

In the Tacoma it wasn't super hard but, not easy either. The Corolla I'm sure will be different.

I got my powerlock and wireless entry kit together from a company called A1 Electronics. (Google it)

They have some general instructions on the web site.

After the power lock units were installed the wireless part is easy as it is simply part of the lock control unit.

I'm glad I did it.

I did have to replace one of the solenoids already because I didn't have it adjusted properly when I installed it.

It is actually not that hard to find the bits to do the keyless but it is a little bit of a pain to install.. Also - be sure if you want to connect an alarm system later that you invest in one that is a two switch setup - ie, a switch to lock and a switch to unlock, otherwise there will be more cost when you get the alarm.

It is very much worth it though...

if it's manual doors, i think it'd be a lot more work involved in powering up each door with actuators..

I hear that having an alarm with manual tranny isn't "wise" to have because there's a possibility that if you leave the car in a gear, ie hill , it can engage and make the car "jump".. or is it auto start....

That is only for Auto starts. Most alarm systems dont have auto start features..

Hi Thai
Are the manual door locks separate or central locking ?
Meaning, if you unlock the drivers door with the key do all doors unlock ?

If central, then all you have to do is splice in a keyless entry module and remove the existing central locking module as I did in the wife's AE112R.

You will either need a wiring diagram for the existing central locking module or a multimeter and electrical knowledge to work out which wire is +, -, switch lock, switch unlock, actuator lock, actuator unlock.

Goto Best Buy in their auto section and ask the technical guy who installs these keyless systems. I hadit installe din my 06 corolla CE from best buy and bought the keyless system from Best Buy also. It has various options but I have only have keyless function working. It is over a year now and it is working ok.

Just be sure that in manual car this can be installed The tech guy has to be smart to know the corolla system.
