Those are your DRL's its a safety feature...I don't think their at full brightness during the day...If you look on your dash on the left side under your window it has a round black sensor that senses darkness and turns on your lights to full power at night, I haven't turned my lights on manually since I bought my car I like that feature...Anyway I heard that you can pull the E-brake up a little and that will shut them off, I never tried it...As for removing the DRL feature there has been many posts here on how to do that, just go to the top right of the corolla forum and where it says "search forum" type in DRL or the question you want to ask...good luck...

They are at ~60% of full power during the day, and will automagically turn on at night (although it may take a few hundred feet of driving if you turn your car on in the dark.)
There is a simple disable for the automagic/daytime lights ... head over the 9thgen and search around over there. Requires crawling under the steering column and clipping a wire, then jumping it to another wire. Took me like 10 mins, max.
The ebrake method does work. Basically, if you pull the ebrake up to the first click, it will show "BRAKE" on your gauge cluster. The DRLs are activated by the ebrake being off and the car being in motion. If you leave it on the first click, the brake light shows, but the brake is not ACTUALLY physically engaged -- the car just thinks it is. So the DRL's will not come on. I dont know how the effects the auto lights though. (The ebrake doesnt physically engage until the 3rd or 4th click)
gbp007, I'm assuming you haven't bought a new car in a LONG time.
Daytime Running Lights is a feature that became government "required" on all cars built on or after 1990 for the north american markets.
Nope just us Canadians have them as mandatory equipment. It is a great feature because you can see headlights coming at you in the daytime alot easier than a car with out them on. They proved it cut down on accidents up here.

They're called daytime running lights, and every new Corolla has them, including my '05 LE. You can disable it with minor wiring under the dash (I did it to mine), but then it turns off your automatic headlights, IMO I would just leave them in unless you get HID.

im not sure about the newer corollas but my 95 has 2 different bulbs for lights, 1 for lowbeam and 1 for highbeam and Daytime Running Lights. all u have to do if you have this setup is disconnect your high beam bulbs if you can live without them.
the electrical system can handle it, but the bulbs burn out fast!!! I dropped my first set at 6 months.
No Wiring is involved to disable them, simply cut the red wire with the white stripe in pin 12 on the connector to the DRL control box located directly up from the brake pedal, it;s the wire on the bottom right looking at it from the wire side it's next to the TWO larger wires. A little electrical tape and all is well

Your right, if your using expensive bulbs it can be costly, my Silverstars never last more then a year.....Even at running 60% power in daylight their always on!

Not for a 2005 Corolla. I've got the 2000 Toyota TSB that says the pin to disconnect on the Corolla is #23, and there aren't 23 pins on my connector. I also have diagrams for the Matrix and Vibe, but they don't match what I'm looking at under the steering wheel. It seems that the 2005 Corolla may be a little different. Most of the stuff that I'm reading says pin #12, but wire on #12 is red/black instead of red/white. I would assume that the color coding is consistent and done for a reason.
