'03 5 spd manual gear oil?

Hi all
Just picked up a 2003 Corolla CE 5 spd manual with 56,000km, and would like to change the gear oil. First off, where the hell is the drain plug? I've found the filler, is the drain plug the same size, and located on the driver's side of the transaxle? (If so, then I've found it, and thank you!). Also, does anybody know what the synthetic gear oil equivalent is to the API GL-5 75W90 recommended by ToyMOCo?
Thanks again!

You want to use Redline or Motul for your synthetic oil brand since they have best reputation.

Having said that, my 6 speed unit has Redline MT-90 (type GL4 has higher viscosity for smooth shifting. Redline MTL is a GL5 type oil, but is not recommended for 2ZZ tranny).

Cheers.

I use Redline MT-90 75W-90 GL-4 in my 06 Corolla manual transmission. Changed the initial fill at 4000 miles, now has 9000 miles and the change is as smooth as silk. Will change every 2 years or 25000 miles.

It really depends on his driving/shifting habits to determine which tranny oil is best for him. Some of the tranny oil have side effects on different weather temperatures. When in doubt use OEM, its what I suggest.

Hi all
I couldn't find the Redline or Motul anywhere, so I just went with Castrol 75w/40 Full Synthetic. My bro in law used the stuff in his Audi, and my wife in her VW with good results. I really notice a difference in shifting now; very smooth! How often you guys replace your gear oil? I figure every 2 years or 35,000KM should suffice for synthetic....?

The 75w-40 viscosity is a little questionable since it is not the recommended type in the user manual. Did you check with a Toyota mechanic about it?
