Manual driver seat problem
For the past few months I noticed that the manual driver seat in my Toyota Corolla 2006 would click while the car accelerates, slows down, or makes a turn. More unpleasant, the seat would sometimes shift slightly while clicking, and that is very distracting to the driver, especially when one drives at higher speeds. Even more unpleasant, this clicking/shifting does not happen all the time, and only in 10-20% of slowing/accelerating/turning cases; sometimes it would not click for days and then would start clicking again for a day or two. Therefore, demonstrating this phenomenon to a car mechanic is a problem. Our family had exactly the same kind of problem with our Toyota Camry 1998. In the latter case, we took the car to the mechanic numerous times with this complaint, and in all cases different mechanics at different Toyota dealerships would say that there is no problem and that we simply imagine it. This time, too, the mechanic at the Clarksville, MD Carmax Toyota dealership said first time that there is no problem with the car. When the problem became even worse (to the point that simply pressing on the seat with your hand or your body makes it shift and make noises), another mechanic at the same dealership finally agreed that there was a problem. It took them more than 3 hours to figure out that the seat assembly needed to be replaced, ten days to have it ordered, and a day to have it replaced. The mechanic then said that the problem cannot be fully eliminated, that the repair that he did will fix only 90% of the problem, that Toyota knows about the problem, and that I should not bother brining the car back even if the problem re-occurs, as there is nothing that he or anyone else could do. The car is still under warranty, and the problem came back almost instantly, although to a lesser extend (less clicking, less shifting).
It appears to be a more general problem than with Corollas and Camrys. Apparently, Tundras have the same problem: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/4runner/19675-manual-driver-seat-2003-4-runner/ In those cases the Toyota mechanics also said that was “normal operation.” Sounds strange for a normal operation of a car seat and of Toyota mechanics.
