What color is the transmission fluid? Has it ever been changed? How is the fluid level when hot? If you did change the fluid, what new fluid did you put back in? Did you tow anything? Sounds like you have a bad shift solenoid valve or torque converter. I would take it to the dealer, as it sounds pretty serious. Have you noticed a loss of power?

You can drain the old fluid out, about 3.2 qts comes out when you drain it, out of a total capacity of 8 qts. The rest of the fluid is in the torque converter. It is really simple to drain, just loosen and remove the tranny drain plug, and let the fluid come out.

I am not sure if changing the fluid will fix your problem, I do not think it could hurt at this point. I assuming the Toyota T-IV fluid was always used in your transmission. Fluid costs about $5-6 here in the northeast, I am not sure what you would pay in Puerto Rico. You never said if the fluid level was high or low, it must be checked when when the car runs for at least 15 minutes. If you answer all my other questions in my first reply, me or someone else might be able to help more. Does it shift abruptly or harshly and have you noticed any unusual noises? When you checked the fluid, was it foamy, and did it smell burnt? How many miles are on your car?

Do not ignore this code, you will probably need a new solenoid or torque converter since it is probably not locking up. I bet if you were to drop your tranny filter (which is more involved that just draining your fluid) there would be metal fragments in it.

I would take it to a dealer, I do not think there is a easy fix. You will likely need a solenoid or torque converter, either way it will be pricey.

 

... maybe the clutchs of trans are burned...

 

2005 Toyota Corolla P0741

I may have a similar problem, but I'm uncertain on what to do. My check engine light is giving me the code P0741 and the message is either the shift solenoid or torque converter malfunctioning. The transmission fluid in my car is bad. No color-red indication in any way. The fluids are gray/dark-gray. I'm planning to switch the transmission fluid, but I don't think this will fix my problem. I'm hoping that the problem is my shift solenoid only and not the torque converter.

My car as of now drives fine. It has about 99k miles on it. The shifting is fine, but the only thing that I've noticed different was that when the car is stopped, the motor does not idle smoothly. The motor idles rough consistently. It could be that this is the beginning of the problem and the symptoms are not as bad. Other people are saying that if the problem is bad, I will notice lag or problems when the car is trying to shift.

Please let me know if you guys have experience this problem before and let me know what should I do. I'm planning on just changing the shift solenoid and the fluid and not the torque converter.:lol: Thank you!

There's a 3 page tsb about this at your dealer. I would take it there and see what's covered or not. TC008-04

 

I am waiting for the new ecm's to come and take the dealer at one time.

When the car goes in and the new ECM does not cure my P0741 I will advise them about the TSB, which they hate, but tough shit on them.

Anyone have a copy of that TSB so i can print it out and bring it with me?

I just got a 2004 corolla with 135K miles on it. The engine code came on like about a week ago and my mec turned it off to reset the brain and told me to drive 60-70 miles to see if it comes back. Yesterday it came back after I drove 300 miles. transmission oil is old. just wanted to ask for your opinion would that helps if I change the oil? because I'm gonna sell it as-is if it is a bad torc convertor. I don't wanna put any more money on it.

Btw car passed smog yesterday morning

 

transmission fluid should be flush if it is bad, but that will not solve your cel problem, you should start by checking your shift solenoid sl to see if it is malfunctioning and check the wire to see if it is lose or bad, if that's not the problem most likely it is your tcc, i have seen it where transmission fluid has been replace and ecu has been replace but cel is still on. good luck and let us know the end result

Check engine light was still on this morning. I stopped by to the bank for a minute and when I got back and turned on the engine, it was off. And still off. I've never seen a check engine light like that is that usual on corollas? it is my first time having one.
