Had a 09 Corolla loaner, MUCH happier with my 2008!
My 2008 with 26K went in yesterday for inspection and some warranty work, they gave me a 2009 S w/131 miles on it as a loaner. UGH! It just felt bad. Steering was busy, traction control seemed to flatten out torque and response. I turned it off, but it turns itself back on again within minutes. Driving position seemed more inclined toward Honda Civic, unlike the formal feel of the 2008. Inside it appeared to be much bigger outside via the mirrors. 150 mph speedo??? C'mon guys, who are you kidding? It's got the same 4 banger as the bottom feeder entry level model. It was bright blue in color, and seemed to attract the slammers around me. I don't know if they thought it had a real motor in it, or they were just laughing at the fact that it's still a Corolla w/a sporty trim level? I did like the upgrades for the same money (heated folding mirrors, trip computer, mp3 jack) but I felt much better getting back in my 08 LE.
I'm glad it took the curiosity of the new car away for me.
150mph speedo... so? my car is got a smaller 4banger with less torque than the 1ZZGE, and it still hits 125mph easily, a little more tweaking and it could hit 150mph.
The rear doors had a hollow metallic sound when opening and closing. My 08 feels and sounds solid. I'm really surprised at the difference! Interior silver trim on left side of center console was distracting. Maybe in a couple months you get used to it...Or maybe it's not a factor when cruising at 150 mph???
thanks for the heads up.....I have been curious about the 09 S.The only thing I didnt like were the "reflectors" in the back bumper, Otherwise it is a nice looking car,I only wish Toyota put the bigger XRS plant in the S instead of the limp wristed 4 banger my S has.I cant even use the A/C or defrost without it feeling like was grabbed by the wedding tackle.

1ZZ-FE
But obviously the 4A-GE is an entirely different animal altogether, there's plenty of options out there to make big power... shame they don't make em like they used to.

so why didn't you buy an XRS instead?

I wish I could have but my wife cannot drive a manual trans So I had no other option to get an auto
Neither does my wife, but that didn't stop me from buying a 3-pedal car.
I do agree with you when you said earlier that XRS models are more likely to have been ragged-out compared with a Corolla of a different trim line. It'd likely be rather hard to find an easily driven un-modded XRS.

I wish I could have but I sold my truck to help get a brand new car so its our one and only for now so it had to be an automatic. If I was gonna buy a 3 pedal car it wouldn't have a piston engine .I agree about the XRS being hard to find un-modded and un-raced....but I have seen them, and if one is considering a used XRS.....go over it with a fine tooth comb to delay costly repairs down the road.Ive seen way too many "kids" have these cars.....run'em in the ground and trade them in.

What else? Wankel? I've never driven one of those. I hear they're very smooth, but sometimes thirsty on fuel. Pretty dead reliable too.

Indeed. I am having a real hard time finding one. Both the ones I have driven so far just feel abused. One I test drove tonight had a check engine light on! I didn't say anything when the sales person gave me the pitch on it being "Toyota Certified". 160 point inspection my a**! Can't even clear a freakin CEL... sheesh.
