How to override the inability to lock car with engine running
Does anyone know if there is a way to override the feature that does not allow the car to be locked while the engine is running, but in park? I would like to start my car and lock it to leave it running as winter is approaching. I know I could just take my keyless entry inside and let it heat up for a bit and come out and it be warm, but it won't allow me to do this. If there isn't a way to override this, I guess I'll just look into a remote starter. What do you guys know about the installation and cost of these? I know you can get the kits reasonably cheap, but how much does the install cost?
i'm not even sure that your keyless entry would work while your car is running. i would suggest, start your car with only the driver door unlocked, get out of the car, and with a spare key lock the driver door from the outside.
You should be able to lock your car with the engine running, but the doors have to be closed. I can lock mine with the engine running, but not if the driver's door is open. If the driver's door is open, and I press the power lock button, the locks momentarily lock, then unlock right away. If the door is closed, I can lock the doors.
If your car is in Park, your power lock button won't lock the doors AT ALL, regardless of whether your driver door is open or closed? That sounds odd. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to work. Mine's a manual transmission car, so there may be a difference there. What about in Drive, or Neutral...can you lock your doors then?

He's talking about keyless entry, not the button on the door
What I want to do is start my car, leave it in park, get out, close all doors, and use my keyless entry button to lock the doors so I can go inside and let my car warm up. My car won't let me lock the doors when the engine is running, in park, with the doors closed, I would assume to keep one from locking keys in while the engine is running. The door locks are fine once it's in drive and whatnot. I just want to be able to warm up my car and melt the ice and snow this winter without worrying that someone will steal my car, as I live in an apartment complex. I know many factory settings can be reversed by doing a string of things like starting engine, turning on flashers, pushing break, locking doors, turning off engine, honking horn....just an example. So I wasn't sure if something similar was available to reverse this. Does that help? I guess I can call Toyota, but it looks like I may have to just buy a remote starter.
Did you try and see if setting the parking brake and putting it in neutral helps.....Not sure if that would help? I would like to be able to do the same thing but I'm not spending money on a remote starter.
Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll have to try that. I don't want to buy a remote starter either. I just hate scraping ice and snow off my car and then waiting for it to get warm enough to be able to see out of the windows. Plus, my car is a 2003 that I've had since it was new and I don't know how much longer I'll have it, so I hate to invest hundreds of dollars for a few winters of use. Thanks for the tip though! I'll see how that works!
I believe u can only Unlock it. i have driven before and randomly hit unlock and it unlocked, but thats about it. i doubt u can lock it while the car is on at all. *but that sounds like a brilliant idea :-/*
Of course it matters what gear it's in. You can lock your doors while your car is in drive, right? I'm assuming the same would be true for neutral. The spare key thing doesn't work. I've tried it.

it definitely doesn't matter what gear its in, as long as the engine is on, the keyless entry will not work. Try it, with your car on, put your car in drive and lock your doors with the keyless entry. It will not work. You must be doing something wrong with the spare key, because I do it all the time.
This is exactly what you have to do.
1) Start your car.
2) With all doors closed, lock the car door with the button on the arm rest.
3) Open the driver side door (It will still open when locked, it will unlock itself)
4) Get out of the car and close the door
5) Lock the door with your spare key. Voila
Try this. Start your engine with the drivers door open. Pull the exterior door handle (like you're opening the door) and then, with the handle still pulled, lock the door from the inside door lock. The door should stay locked and you can shut the it. Caution...this is a way too easy to lock your keys in your car.
i put my remote start into my subaru recnetly. it cost 50 bucks on ebay. and its an ultra start so its a respectable company
the keyless works even when the car is on because it is wired independently..
and i did the wiring myself. so that wasnt too bad.. just takes patience... and a few wiring diagrams...
liek a few people said use a spare key... or look into these remote starts... if a store will let you, you can try buying this system.. and then payign htem to install it. for less than if they were to sell you the product too.. hopefully..
