2004 CE Trunk Lock

On my 2004 CE, the rear Trunk Lock is getting to the point where the key has to be moved around in order to find the spot where it unlocks the trunk. The problem is getting worse and worse.

The trunk release beside the seat had been removed so the only means of getting inside the trunk is by using a key.

Does anyone else have this problem? How was it fixed?

It's now taking me about 10-20 seconds to position the key properly to unlock the trunk. I only use the trunk maybe twice a week. It's used to hide anything that has been purchased while still out.

Has anyone ever replaced a trunk lock before. Is it a difficult task? How does one go about getting a lock that fits the current car key?

Why is the inside release gone? Could that be contributing to it? It everything attached and tight inside your trunk?

Is the key in the trunk lid or body? Which ever location remove the trunk liner behind the lock to access.

If the key is not turning, the lock may be worn out and need to be replaced.

As a temp fix spray lock graphite into the lock, a common product at hardware stores.

Have you tried using another key, a worn key can cause problems.

The lock should be easy enough to remove, the dealer should have a replacement it may not be the same key.

If the key is turning the issue is in the locking mechanism. This is typically on the opposite area of the lock latch and is usually held in by a couple of bolts.

Thanks for all the advice.

The trunk release was removed by me as I do not want anyone to get in the trunk easily.

I ended up spraying WD-40 in to the key hole. I pushed and pulled the key in and out listening to all the pins fall on the key pattern. It was really, really rough sounding and started to get better. When I tried to rotate the key it still did not open the trunk. The key does not actually rotate, it just didn't move. I ended up spraying inside the key hole again with WD-40. I repeated the same process and gave the key a slight tap when it was fully inserted.

This time it felt very smooth when re-inserting the key. With a very slight twist the trunk popped open. It is working this way repetitively and the fix took maybe 5 minutes to lube the pins in the lock Tumbler.

Same things happening to my 03 even though I hardly use the key feature, might be the tumblers are worn or messed up, a locksmith could replace them easily, just my opinion!

Thanks

As mentioned in post 6, working WD-40 in solved the problem. I'm relieved I don't have to dump money in to the lock.

WD-40 typically only works for a short time. Still suggest using lock graphite.
