? on the Gearbox for a 2003 Corolla

Hi All,

It appears that my poor little Corolla S is going to need a replacement gearbox. What gearbox should I be looking for? And will the gearbox from any previous or subsequent years fit my car?

Thanks for your advice!

Brian

Transmission code is C59, check out page 135 of http://www.carlibrary.ru/toyota/serv...ures_specs.pdf

It appears that some minor work was done between the years. The first gen Matrix should have the same tranny, I would assume the Vibe would have the same tranny too. Did your tranny take a dump?

Not yet, but I sense the impending doom. I have had the car to two shops and some bearing somewhere in there is getting ready to fail. I get a lot of noise from the gearbox when the car is moving. It runs fine and shifts normally. But there is some mechanical noise coming from the gearbox. The puzzler for me is that the noise stops when I put the clutch in and the car is moving. So, question...If there was a problem in the gearbox, wouldn't the noise continue if the car was moving regardless of clutch position? The gears would still be moving, right? So is it possible the gearbox is fine and the clutch/pressure plate is the culprit?

I'd sure appreciate any advise.

Thanks

With the car moving, if you push the clutch in and it is still in gear, the meshed gears in the tranny will still be turning. If you toss it in neutral only the output set of gears will be spinning. The input gears should be quite close to stopped.

If you push in the clutch with the car still moving when it made the noise and the noise goes away, that to me would indicate a clutch issue.

It's not a clutch issue at all it is a bearing in your tranny and I went through this crap last summer with my 06. I went and bought a used tranny from the wreckers from a 07 with only 5400 kms (3100 miles) and had that installed. I kept my old one to have it rebuilt when this one goes and from what I understand it will.

03 to 08 Corolla and Matrix/Vibe will all work in your car.
