i brought some light off ebay. i been stupid did not read the fine print and bid on this lightbulb for my 08 corolla.
now i have it, i don't know if it's high or low beam, i don't want to install it and mess up my car so... please help me out.
the lightblub i got is 9006, 5000k, super white, 12v 100W->140w
thanks!
Well, 9006 is low beam. It is somehow over the standard wattage of 55 W. I am not sure if it is marketing, but watch out that it does not melt anything. I would not use overwattage bulbs in my car.
here is a picture of the bulb i got. i can't return it now... i guess i will take that as an lesson. i should had ask on this forum before buying one....
now that we are topic, can anyone suggest me a lighblub? i just don't like the stock one.... want something different and cool
I've done both HIRs and 9005 conversion. I much prefer the 9005 bulbs. I've got a set of Sylvania Xtravision 9005 bulbs in my low beams and they're EXCELLENT.
sorry for been pain in the ass, i did some search on HIR and 9005 conversion and didn't find much information on it. could you guys explain it little bit for me?
and thanks for the input, i think i will try out the Sylvania Xtravision 9005
found these on amazon, i can use these on my 08 corolla right?

9005 are high beams and they're not Xtravision they're 9006 ultras, I use them with no problem, others here don't like them because they burn out quick(about a years life) mostly because of DRL and the bulb is tinted blue to erase the stock yellow look and they say it gives off less light then an untinted bulb, I like them and that's a really good price, auto parts stores even walmart sells them for $49 even higher...Amazon.com is my favorite product web, they're cheaper then others on a lot of items and most of the time they will ship free and they are super fast on shipping...

It's easy to use the 9005 in the low beam. You just trim some off the top "ear" of the bulb, where it slots into the headlight housing. Two ears are the same between a 9005 and 9006, but one is different to prevent you from installing the wrong bulb. You can trim some of the ear away to get it to physically fit. And there are two key slots inside the connector. Look at the electrical prongs...you'll see two parallel stick up keyways...just grind those down with a Dremel. With a Dremel tool, you can modify one 9005 bulb to fit into the low beam lamp in about 3 minutes.
I wouldn't use the Silverstars, for the reasons Raddman mentioned above. The 9005 Xtravisions burn pretty dadgum white. Here are a few comparison pictures. Here's a 9006 standard bulb in the right side an a 9005XV on the left side:
Here's a Toshiba 9012 (HIR) bulb in the right, same 9005XV in the left. The HIR is a marked improvement over the standard 9006...but still not what I wanted:
Here's the 9005XV in both:
It'd be interesting to do some color comparisons against a Silverstar. But I'm VERY happy with the 9005XVs. They subjectively look nice (mostly white) and the blow away any other 9006-type bulb in terms of light output.
That IS an awesome price on the Silverstar Ultras. I might pick up a pair, just to do some color comparisons. I may like to use them in my fog lights, which don't have a very strong beam anyway (so light output isn't critical). Thanks for the link on those. If I get them, I'll do a color comparo with the stock lights and 9005XV high beams.
i just got some Xtravision 9006 XV from walmart and installed it. from what i see, i can only tell a little difference. i will have to try it out tomorrow night.
oh, and please do an comparo if you get those silverstar ultra. i think the 9006XV will do for now

Any legal 9006 bulb can only put out 1000 lumens, +/- 15% (or 150 lumens). So the lowest amount of light you can legally have from one of these bulbs is 850 lumens, and you'd be lucky to have that out of the blue-coated "Xenon" bulbs they market out there. The most amount of light you can have is 1150 lumens, which is what you'll have out of a bulb like the Sylvania Xtravision, the GE Nighthawk, Philips Vision Plus, etc.
Everything else, and I mean EVERYTHING else, is all in marketing (if it's a legal bulb). The GE Nighthawk advertises 30% more light (or further light, or something like that). It can't legally produce 1000 lumens + 15%, so anything they claim is either marketing jargon or manipulation of the filament placement to try to get a better beam. The efficacy of that obviously highly depends on the lamp housing's optics.
So you can see how a 9005 bulb, even the WORST 9005 bulb, would be a much larger improvement. A 9005 lamp is legally required to produce 1700 lumens, +/- 15%. So the worst you'd get out of a 9005 is about 1500 lumens. The best you'll get (again, such as with a GE Nighthawk or Sylvania Xtravision) is almost 2000 lumens. So by using the 9005XV, you stand to nearly DOUBLE your forward lighting, for about 18 bucks.
Thanks for the detail information. I was stupid to think that you have to get a kit to put 9005 light bulb in the 9006 socket.... lol So, I can just buy an 9005 XV light bulb and put it in where the 9006 bulb suppose to go(after the little trimming i guess ).
Now that is interesting! man, you learn something new everyday!
I am a noob when it comes to car so, hehe ^^;; I am very happy to find this place. thanks everyone!
