gas cap issues

Good evening. 2005 Corolla S

Gas cap in cold weather is apparently not going tight or just no secure. As my engine light keeps coming on. The yellow one not red light I am talking about

mechanics of car work good, no weird noises etc.

I had same situation a few weeks back, solved it when i turned the cap again.

Now its back and won't go away/

Anyone else out there experience same situation with this or simlar model car.

Any suggestions to make it stop etc?

Thanks

Are you sure it isn't the maint required light? Because that one goes on when the car thinks you need an oil change. To reset, hold down the odometer selection button while turning the key from "Off" to "On".

Did you get the code checked? Is the light you are seeing a picture of an orange engine or maintenance required light? It maybe a different problem other than the gas cap. Does the cap click when you tighten it? When you get the code pulled, and it comes back P0442, just buy a new gas cap.

orange engine light

Yes the picture is of an orange engine.

Like i mentioned before, I had same problem a few weeks back. So i turned my gas cap. Then it was fine.

Now the light came back on and won't go off.

I clicked the gas cap. Its solidly in there. But still have light on.

No weird sounds anywhere there.

Been really cold here lately -28C . maybe thats it?

Any suggestions?

Pull the code. There are other things that can cause the CEL to come on, gas cap problem is just one of them.

code

How do I pull the code?

What would be other reasons for the orange light to come on?

You will need an OBDII scan tool to pull the code, maybe a parts store up in your area will do that for you for free.

Drivability issues, emission issues, engine control issues all can cause the ECM to turn on the Check Engine Light. A loose gas cap would be consider an Emission related issue, however, there are different codes for different conditions. It still maybe gas cap related, but without a code to narrow down the possibilities you may run around in circles without getting anyway.

What should I do? Should I take it in. Right now no actual mechanic problems visible other then the light?

How long should I wait? or should I bring my car to Toyota ASAP?

Your opinions?

You just need to retrieve the code right now, without knowing what code is there isn't anyway to determine what is going on. Check around your area parts store to see if they will pull the code for you for free. If the dealer is your only option, that is where you will have to go to pull the code.
