I'm looking at buying a Corolla for my son. Is a 2003 with 90k plus miles going to be reliable if in good condition? They seem to be going for about $8000. Is that too much to pay for a used car? I own a 2009 Tacoma and the wife has a 2004 4- Runner but I have never had a vehicle with much over 100k miles before I sold it. I have been told with good maint. you can get 200k miles out of a Corolla. Any help is appreciated.
You can check Kelly's Blue Book for price ranges. I'm sure there are people selling their used car for less than that price. the least i would expect to pay would be about 6-7k for around that year and mile. My 01 corolla has around 96k miles and if i could i would look for around 4K or so.

That sounds a bit high if it is a private party sale. My daughter (with my advice and cosignature) paid slightly over $8000 for her 2003 Corolla in summer 2007 with about 80K miles to a private party. I think the asking price was $8900 and we negotiated. Depends on the geographical region too. My daughter's Corolla has run well for a year and a half, although it did turn up a P0420 code this Christmas that I haven't solved yet. This is an emissions issue and doesn't affect the operation of the car. The car still looks and runs almost like new. I have an older Camry that is running great at 160,000 miles with no maintenance other routine.
In my opinion, buying a 4 or 5 year old Corolla or Civic is one of the best buys around. I bought Civics for both daughters around when they went to college, and neither had any significant problems. One of them (a 97) is still running fine after 7 years and a trip cross country.
You can pay a little more and get a Certified car with up to 100K miles warranty and this is also a good deal.

That's probably a bit high... I got offered around $7500 on my '04 LE (60,000 miles) a few months ago by numerous dealers when I was considering a trade. I decided to keep the car.. and to a million miles I go :-D
Check rental places like Hertz or Avis. I bought a 2006 with 19000 mi for about $9000. I got it early this past year and the care was in EXCELLENT condition. All maintenance records were kept and the warranty was still valid until May of this year.
i have an 03 corolla S with roughly 70,000 miles on it and i bout it 3 years ago with 45,000 on it and the only thign i do to the car is oil changes. I have never had one pronlem with the car.

if 8000 with 2 more years extended warranty off dealer, sure why not, but 8000 and everything on your own, hell no, 90k is pretty much about time to fix, so , and also hows body condition, if you really want the car, bring it to the body shop and do a rust check first. engine good don't means the car will last with damaged/rusted body.

a 2003 rolla with 90 k is good for 8grand you could turn that car around and prolly sell it for 12,000 but other than that the corolla is a great car deff buy him a standard if he knows how to use one and other than that they r very good on gas. and with gas prices going back up again it doesnt cost much to fill it so i would say yes it would b great for him
i'd offer $7K and be firm.. btw, I picked up an 04 w/ 125K miles for only $4K.. The way it drives, you wouldn't have even known how many miles it had unless I told ya..
The price seems high to me. Especially since it is the earliest of the 9th generation. AKA meaning that by the later models such as the 08, much of the earlier dings have been worked out. I have an 05 LE and my friend an 08 LE. Although the appearance both interior and exterior is similar, i notice a significant difference in the acceleration on the 08. I'm sure it could just be the fact that his 08 is brand spankin' new and mine is worn in by now. Just a thought...
But like the other TN members have posted, it all depends on how the car was maintained, but of course the dealer does not have any record of that all they have to offer is a plain carfax report.
In my opinion i would keep looking if you have not done so already.
