06 Corolla LE Auto jerks when shifting

I recently noticed that my 06 corolla jerks when shifting between 1st and 2nd when shifting around 2500rpm. The shift point between 1st and 2nd is more abrupt but when shifting in the higher gears it starts to disappear. Interestingly enough the check engine light also came on around the same time. Any suggestions on what the issue might be?

My 05 LE Auto has the same "jerk" symptom between 1st and 2nd gear. While the higher shifts are much smoother. Also my acceleration is noticeably really low during that time (1st to 2nd shift), especially when accelerating from a complete stop. A few TN members suggested cleaning the MAF sensor and/or throttle body for my acceleration problem but i just cannot find the time or the courage. I know i could take it to a shop, but the satisfaction of fixing something yourself is just unmatched.

What kind of jerk are you guys talking about? I have an 06 as well, but I have not had any type of jerk. However, I would replace the air filter first thing. If you could give me some more details, I will try to help.

Thanks!

Well it is hard to describe but it seems like the car hesitates when it changing from 1st to 2nd. I have observed that when i press the accelerator at a stop light the car takes a while to get back up to speed, but as soon as i cross the 1600 RPM mark everything shifts smoothly and picks up speed quickly.

Thanks for the help.

I have seen the 2005-07 Corollas have PCM issues that cause harsh or jerky shifts in the auto trans. THe only effective repair that I am aware of is to replace or reprogram the PCM. Usually the PCM is covered under a 8yr/80,000 mi emissions warranty.

Yes, I had the same symptoms on my 06 and it was indeed the PCM.
