no gas after detailing service

So I took my newly bought used 2005 Corolla to a detailing service to clean up the interior. Left it there in the morning; they promised to call around 3 for me to come pick it up; they don't call, at 5:30 I call them and they say it'd be ready in 15 minutes. I pick up the car, take it home and realize the tank is almost empty, while it had been about half-full in the morning when I left the car in the shop. Distance between home and shop is like a quarter of a mile. How did they manage to eat up all that gas? Hopefully they're not running errands with customers' cars??
What is your opinion?

Thanks!

Wouldn't surprise me. Is it a reputable place or no? If anything, go back and speak to the manager and/or the owner.

Sounds like you got taken. I'd raise hell with the owner and then file a police report. Let 'em know about it, as well as the bad press that they're gonna get as you pass the word around.

Dang - what a bunch of D bags....

Did you record the mileage before you dropped it off? It's also possible that they (or even somebody else) siphoned the tank.

Other possibilities include the angle at which you park ... maybe in the morning it was at an odd angle which made the tank appear fuller ... then in the evening it was at an opposite angle making the difference appear dramatic. I dunno...searching for something other than a criminal detailing shop...

Yeah, maybe so.... but that would not stop me from raising some hell.

I have NO tolerance for thieves. If I did not get satisfaction one way, I get it another. They'd pay for that 1/2 tank of gas - I just might not get my money for it.

I have no idea how reputable they are. They've got like 3 employees. Since I can't prove the gas was there in the morning (I didn't record the level, just took a look by chance the evening before), it would be my word against theirs and they would probably deny vehemently. Don't want to give out their name on the Internet because I know how ruining this can be for anybody's reputation and I'm not 100% positive what happened there, could be what Jason suggested that I somehow fooled myself that the tank was half-full. I was just wondering how common this is.. like maybe they turned on the air-conditioning to dry out the carpets after shampooing.. Anyways thanks a lot for the support guys!

give out their names. screw them.

this happened to me with my wife's corrolla and one of my older cars.

now i bring my car in rev limited at 3k rpms and wastegate duty set to 0 (for my evo).

i would mention something. you'd probably won't get anywhere but at least it may make you feel better.
