2004 Corolla LE Engine Light Issue (Gas Cap resulted)

When I bought this car from Avis, I was told that the engine light sometime turns itself on when it mistakenly thinks the gas cap is not fully sealed. Well, he was right (the light has been on) and I heard the same complaint from other owners of the same model. So, my question is, how can I turn this engine light off? Should I go to the Toyota dealer. Or, is there a way that I can turn it off by myself? Thanks.

well before you just clear the code you should atleast get it read so you know what it is, theres a thousand things besides a gascap that can set the light.
