2004 with 96,000 miles.check engine light just lite up. is there a usual problem?

could be anything really.
most likely an O2 sensor.
go to you local big box mc-auto center they usually will check out the codes for free.
that will tell you exactly what the problem is.

cel . code reads==

1) PO171, system too lean (bank 1)
2)PO133, 02 sensor ckt
slow response (bank 1 sensor 1).

awhile back i read a post somewhere about how to access the 02 sensor to replace it. something about going at it thru the paassenger side ,front under the carpet??

anyone have their corolla totally stalll becuse of any "cel" ?? i,ll keep you guys posted as things progress .

Both codes point to the front O2 sensor (not the one where you remove the carpet), although the P0171 code is very broad. Check out the TSB first.

The intake manifold gaskets are very common for causing this symptom.

booged down at 30mph=

another symptom= couple of days ago at around 30mph car refused to gain any more speed even with pedal to the metal. also driver comp[lained of a gasoline smell in the car. also whem driver exited the parked car noticed another gasoline smell. i drove the car the next day and no symptoms observed. "cel"still shining bright. when i get time to fix it i,ll post the results.
