I just had to post this because I thought it was strange, and Toyota has upset me.
In the cold wheather recently in BC, Canada, my check engine light came on, I took it to Toyota and they told me they have had a lot of problems with check engine lights coming on lately and they believe it has been from the cold weather,(because we never get weather like this, -12)
So they tell me, yes just as we suspected you need a new charcoal canister, but its on backoder so we will let you know when it comes in.
I wait one month and no call from Toyota to tell me whats going on. I call them and they tell me....
Toyota Canada said that it is refusing to give out any more Charcoal canisters under warrenty(unless I want to pay for it)..... Because Toyota dealerships are diagosing this as the problem for the check engine lights coming on at it is not the problem.
The dealerships are replacing the charcoal canisters and people's check engine lights are still coming on after.
I ask the guy at the dealership "well didn't you hook it up to get codes and he says " well we are just telling people it is the charcoal canister because as of right now we don't know what the problem is. "But Toyota Canada is working on it"
It has been another 2 weeks and still nothing. So they have no idea why the check engine lights are coming on.
The guy at the dealership told me that if you take a car through air care with the check engine light on they will automatically fail you!! how wonderful
So, I don't really know what I think of Toyota, I am scared and not looking forward to when my warranty runs out.
I just wanted to post that because it sounds crazy to me, I don't know if I should be yelling at Toyota or what but I guess I am kind of brushing it under the rug utill more time passes with "no proper customer service from Toyota.
So they refused to repair your car under warranty? Isnt that illegal? Can you go to another dealer or contact toyota canada? It sounds like they want your warranty to expire so you pay for it.
What is the code? Take it to an auto garage and have them give you the code. Many stores in the U.S. will do it for free (Advance, AutoZone, etc). Check around for stores near you. Maybe Canadian Tire does this service, I don't know. Get the code and post it here.
I had my check engine light comes on when out side is -30 c, but once get warmer the light just go off, the dealership also tell people make sure the gas cap is clear no ice around so you can close it tight, most engine light comes on because the gas cap is not close right. if I am you, check the gas knob first.
2nd also under the grill area, if you have snow blocks the vent, try to remove those snow, there is sensor under the grill area. "between the fog lights"
hope those help you out.

Got this CEL last monday also, temperature here in Calgary was only -8*C and it was code P0171. Cleared at Auto Value for free. They said it`s usual when i`s cold and when you run on highways... This morning was -17 and no CEL on. I`ve read on other threads that a leak on the intake manifold caused this also.
My warrenty does not run out until 2010(not looking forward) but the dealer said that Toyota Canada, is refusing to give out any more charcoal canisters to anyone because it is not the problem.
Toyota Canada seems to have no clue what the problem is except that " they are having a lot of CEL coming on because of the colder than usuall weather here (BC, Canada, you know we usually only have a lot of rain, ha,ha
My CEL went off after a few days, and my car is running fine. Hopefully they don't tell us all in canada that the CEL comes on in the cold weather?? or we are all screwed.
I know I would be really mad if my warranty was almost up and they were jacking me around then.
I'll call around and see if I can get a code somewhere else. Thank you for the code of PO171 and I will ask about the sensor under the grill.

I had my canister done over a year ago and within a week the light was back on, then off, then on, then off, and it runs fine, my fuel milage is awesome so I said F&#@ it and I have 330,000 km's on my car and the lights been on for 200,000 of those and it's still just peachy. I think the next time it goes out will because the bulb burnt out...

We have 3 2006 Corollas and One 2006 Matrix.
We have had days this year that were in the -40degC with windchill -30ish without windchill, and none of our engine lights have come on.
So cold is probably not the only issue your facing, and there might actually be somthing more serious.
Also maybe its your gas cap, as thats a common problem many others have had, and maybe your gas cap works fine in warmer temps but not in the cold, maybe the seals in the cap freeze up?. Just an idea. probably worth checking it out.
