05 Corolla XRS High RPM at Idle...???? Help?? - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums

Ok so i bought my 2005 Corolla XRS today... and drove it around for a couple hours and it was awesome... then i went to a drive through and noticed that all of a sudden... while idling... i was at like 2,000-2,100rpm's... and then turned off my car and turned it back on... and still it was doing it... then i drove a few miles to get home.... and by the time i got there.... it was idling at the usual 1,000rpm... and working completely normal.....

Sorry to be so descriptive.... but has anyone here had any experience with that same issue? Had the same problem ... or know what is may be.... or what it could be leading up to.....

This car has 34,300 miles on it....

Any help would be great... thanks....

it's normal for the engine to idle at 2k if the engine is cold

after the engine temperature goes up it'll drop down. normal idle should be 700 to 800 with a fully warmed up engine.

05 with 34k, you should still have bumper to bumper warranty. i wouldn't worry so much about it. if you suspect anything is wrong, take it to a dealer.

Ok ya i know what cold idle should be... im a mechanic... But my car had been at operating temp for over an hour when this happened.... while it was hot i went to pull through Jack n The Box drive thru for food... and while i was sitting there i thought i had my foot on the gas.... but i didnt... it was just idling at 2,000 rpm..... so i then turned my car off and back on.... and still it was doing it.... for the next 5-6 minutes as i sat there it was doing it still.... but after i drove home... it was idling like normal....

I was just seeing if anyone had heard of this before....Thanks...

When it is cold, 2ZZ-GE idles at 2000 - 2100 rpm

Once warmed up, the idle rpms drop to 900 - 1000 rpm.

Remember, the rev limiter will be reduced to 7000 rpm and the cam switch over to high-performance at 6600 rpm will not happen when the engine is cold. Once the engine reaches normal operational temperature (needle half way), the rev limiter is adjusted back to 8400 rpm and the high performance cam will engage normally at 6600 rpm.

It is perfectly normal. I remember when I first got it, I was surprised as well considering my 1ZZ-FE used to idle at 1200 - 1500 rpm when cold and dropped to 700 rpm when warmed up.

ONCE AGAIN... THE CAR WAS WARM!!! (not an angry exclamation-just getting my point out).... i had already been driving for over an hour already... how much warmer does it need to be than that? trust me... the 1st thing i looked at was the temp guage.... and it was in the middle basically... so it was fully warmed up already... yet stilll idling at 2,000 RPM..... i dont know what was going on.... but i guess until it does it again i wont worry too much about it....

Just keep an eye on it for the time being, if it happens again and you're still under warranty, bring it in to the dealership, and try to describe to them in detail so they can recreate the problem and diagnose it.

bingo. . .

IACV aka Idle Speed Valve is most likely very dirty.

Clean with some sensor cleaner (MAF cleaner will suffice), and while you are at it, clean the throttle body.

Cleaning the MAF may help as well, but mostly for smoother idle.

A bad MAF would cause your car to be unable to rev past 3k rpms.

Please tell us the results, when you are done.

Any aftermarket air filter or intake? MAF cleaning may help, but since you should disconnect the negative battery terminal to clean the MAF (and thus reset ECU if disconnected for a while), that maybe more beneficial that cleaning the MAF itself.

No... no aftermarket mods at all... vehicle is completely stock..... and just one quick question for whoever may be able to help.... whats the best way to go about cleaning my Throttle body.... for my 2ZZ-GE? Just remove the air box and ckean inside it? or actually remove the throttle body itself....? Thanks.

no, don't remove the throttle body. it takes way too much time and unnecessary, just remove the hose the goes to the tb. i thought you were a mechanic?

Honda Mechanic. I honestly dont know much about Toyota's and i just wanna make sure there is nothing special i need to be doing for this motor in particular.... every vehicle has its little tricks/tips for doing certain things.... so i just wanna make sure everything is done correctly...

Remember to clean your MAF sensor as well.
