I'm trying to get a good Engine Oil for performance/protection.
so what engine oil is suitable for the Corolla? Do I only get 5W30 engine oils?
and what brand is good? or is it just rather Synthetic or just regular oils?

I basically want good performance but still can run 5000km like conventional oils.
How about transmission oils? is there other kinds which effects the performance?
i'd go with mobil 1. i use that on all my cars and have no problems. I'm always beating on them and they work fine. as for the weight i really just go ahead and put what ever the service manual says comes from factory
As long as it's what is recommended from the manufacturer - that is what you should use. 5W-30.
Mobil 1 is fine, but I heard that they no longer are considered a "true" synthetic oil as they supposedly went the Castrol Syntec route and cracked a few carbon molecules and called it synthetic.
Anyway, I have used Mobil 1 synthetic (not the EP version) since when I 1st got my car (Matrix, but with the same engine as the 9th generation Corolla) and it has been good.
The last year I noticed though the engine wasn't as smooth as when I 1st started using Mobil 1. Then I researched about the Mobil 1 oil shortage in some retail stores and decided to try something else.
Used Valvoline SynPower and immediately noticed the engine was smoother and quieter as compared from before.
I can only relate my experience, but I am sure whatever oil brand you choose, would be sufficient for a daily driven vehicle.

+1
I used to use Mobil 1 as well and noticed that my engine was running a lot noisier than it was even compared to when I was using conventional.... needless to say I switched oils after that. I'm currently using Castrol Syntec myself and the problem is gone. I think the problem with Mobil 1 is that it shears down to a lower weight oil really quickly.

I tried Mobil 1 once in my minivan and it quickly proceeded to generate a lifter noise. So I switched THAT out quick. I don't use synthetic oils anymore in anything. Any API-SM oil will protect your engine for the long haul. Go to BITOG and pour over all the used oil analyses and do your own cost/benefit calculation. For me, it's conventional oil on 3-5k mile intervals.
