2003 rough at higher RPMs

Dear Forum Members,

One of my 2003 corolla LE seem to be very rough at higher RPMs. For example when accelerating from a stop, I can feel roughness and vibration past 2500 RPM. Also it seems that the car is not smooth at higher RPMs. However, the engine is very smooth at RPMs below 2500 no matter which gear.

I have cleaned the MAF sensor and reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery. Checked the spark plugs and they are clean. The car has 82K miles on it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi jonjoe,

Thanks for your response. I had the tires balanced and wheels aligned only last week. The roughness at higher RPMs is not only when I am driving but also when I press gas while idling.

Anyone else with any other suggestions?

Thanks.

could be a number of things,

brakes
transmission
CV
driveshafts
engine internals
anything that spins has the potential to be off balance, causing your problem.

Hi trippinonfohos,

I think I found the clue to the vibration at higher RPMs. It most probably is the exhaust pipe vibration I am experiencing at higher RPMs. I have to check out the exhaust hangers sometime.

Thanks.
