Canada Question about tires spinning in the rain?

Hello everyone, this is my first post.
I just bought a used 2005 toyota corolla ce se maunal with 32000 km
I have 3 questions.
The first is, today I was a little late for work i was at a 3 lane on the right at a set of lights. Needed to pass the slow people on the left of me. As the light turned green i let the c lutch out perfectly, once it was out i push the gas at about 3/4 throtle. It was rainy and my right tire started to slip and then while slipping it shook the car really badly then i let off and then gave it gas again which spun and shook again. because of the amount of acceliration. So I put the c lucht in and shifted to second. The tires still spun. This all happend in about 5 seconds. Just wonder how bad this was for my car? Why it did it in 1st gear not 2nd? And what tires are better in the rain?
Thanks
P.S. ( I am really trying to baby my new car. I feel bad for what i did and i am now taking the hwy route to work instead because of all the 5:00 traffic)

Oh one more question which route would you take.
a route going into the city, with bumby roads, 16 traffic lights, stop and go at 8 kms and a 50km per hour speed limit
or 20 km hwy route smooth hwy with 7 traffic lights and not alot of traffic with a 90 km per hour speed limit

just wondering which would be better on fuel, wear and tear

highway is always better...
as far as your tire slipping, its cause the road was wet, if you give it too much juice, naturally its gona slip, thats whats supposed to happen. Chances are, you did absolutely nothing to the car that would mess it up. maybe just used a little more gas than you should have.

P.S. is there such thing as a Corolla CE SE? lol

I see you're in North Bay, Ontario, Canada with a 32,000 km 2005 Corolla. Let me guess..the tires are Goodyear Integritys, right? If so, you're about ummmm....32,000 km past their safe life span. Put something decent, and it doesn't have to be expensive, on the car and you will be amazed at the improvement in every driving aspect. For $600 or less you can get middle of the road Toyos from your local outlet.

Oops, forgot to mention that, yes, there is a Corolla CE SE in Canada. It's a CE with aluminum wheels and a sunroof and was a heck of a deal when they were selling them. If I remember, the price premium was about that of the sunroof and the wheels were more or less free.

I still slip from time to time on wet roads while starting in first. And maybe you should try to use less gas at start while on a wet road. And 2nd gear shouldnt be doing that unless once again, you use too much gas.

Try holding the clutch in a little and using your 3/4 of gas and slowly let off the clutch and you shouldnt have a problem with slippage

I would just baby the gas pedal until the clutch is all the way engaged. Then give it gas. The tires will likely not slip nearly as bad if the clutch is fully engaged before you give it gas. When I drive mine, I give it just enough gas to engage the clutch at as slow of a speed as possible. Then, when the clutch is fully engaged (at about 1200 RPM), I'll give it gas. This way, clutch wear and fuel use are minimal.

I just purchased a 2007 Ce Auto, and it spun the tires in the rain the other day. I thought it was just because it was so peppy!!
