Nope, you live in California.

Started on January 1st, 2009 - CA registered vehicles cannot use universal cat. converters.

What a crock. The only real difference between a universal and an OE-fit converter is the piping before and after the brick (to match lengths, flanges, hangers, etc). The actual brick is usually the same.

The law says that you can't use a universal converter, or you can't use an aftermarket converter?

Both, I have personally looked into replacing my cat. converter as I got the p0420 code.

Aftermarket companies are unwilling to ship to California registered cars any cat. converters unless the replacement is made specifically for that vehicle.

Then there are muffler shops that are also hesitant to weld off the bad cat and install the replacement.

I still think there are ways around this, but I still need to research further.

Till then I reset the CEL, which does not come back for a month or 2 for me.

I'm in San Diego and I'm in the same boat. Called a few muffler shops and they won't do aftermarket for me...
