To change the filter on a North American Corolla, you open the glove box and let it hang open all the way. There's a small Philips head screw that attaches to a small damper on the right side (looks like a shock absorber). Remove this screw to unhook the damper, and pull the glove box door down. You may have to squeeze the sides in to lower the glove box door down all the way, I don't recall.
Directly behind the glove box is the filter, and the access cover for the door. Remove the access cover and just pull the filter straight out. Replace the filter and reverse what you undid to put it back together. It takes all of about 3 minutes.
The part itself should be less than $20 from your dealer. I bought a Fram Fresh Breeze cabin filter for about half that off Amazon.com. I found the Fram to be exactly equivalent to the Toyota filter in terms of size and quality. The Fram filter is supposed to have Arm & Hammer baking soda on it to eliminate odors. I can't tell if it really makes a difference or not, but even without it, it's a quality filter for less cost than the Toyota filter.
Living in NC, with a lot of pollen, I change the cabin filter yearly. It just makes good sense.
