The Celica has 180hp and 133 pounds of torque but not only that, the variable valve timing kicks in at 5500 rpm where mine kicks in at 7000. Now I believe that the difference in the two engines is the programming of the ECU.
My question is, has anyone swaped or reprogrammed the Corolla ECU with the Celica ECU? Or if it is not the ECU, has anyone got their XRS to perform like the Celica without all the added aftermarket parts.

To answer your questions, regardless of marketing campaign, Celica GTS makes as much power and torque to the wheels as Corolla XRS does. That is what all dynos show consistently. With intake/exhaust on, several Corolla XRS dyno'ed higher than Celica GTS with exact same mods (mileage might be the reason).
Secondly, no VVT-i does not kick in since VVT is continuous and found on every toyota. It is lift ('L' part of VVTL-i) that switches at 6600 rpm and not 7000 rpm for Corolla XRS. The Celica GTS have lift engagement at 6200 rpm (2003+ had it engaging at 6400 rpm).
If you want to tune VVT and 'lift', you would need a stand alone computer like Hydra EMS or Apexi PFC to tune both VVT and lift since the Celica GTS ECU is not swappable into Corolla XRS as the pinouts are different.
