Air Intake Filter

I was looking to just take my black box off and install an intake filter on the factory hose, and I was wondering if this was alright without having to get the actual short ram intake because I dont want to mess with my sensors.

If so what is the diameter of the hose?

How would you connect the aftermarket filter to the factory air hose? There'd really be no way to securely fasten it. Plus, the Toyota filter seems pretty efficient. It's the rubber flex pipe that folks like to replace to get the "gain".

I would recommend opening up the factory airbox and having a look inside. Attached to the lid, you'll see a carbon/charcoal emissions filter. This isn't much other than some carbon pellets between two screens. I actually removed this on mine (no real difference in performance). Plus, as I recall, the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow sensor) is actually installed in the airbox cover. So if you remove the airbox, you're actually removing the MAF sensor mount as well.

Yeah...the MAF is on the stock airbox....so you would have to figure out how to mount it otherwise if you made your own pipe. Isn't the flex tubbing smooth on the inside any ways? No benefit of metal pipe there then...that would actually increase intake temps as everything metal gets hot under the hood.

Thanks for the replies

So what is the point for a short ram intake when its a puzzle to figure out what to do with the MAF and a chance for the Check Engine Light to come on?

I see my friends go through this which is why I had not gotten a short ram intake

But I am looking on the site, and I see that it works with a cold air intake and allows the MAF box to stay on right?

Is this fine with an 05?

The pic of the MAF SENSOR ADAPTER contains the MAF sensor & internal air straightener (adjusts air volume passing the sensor). PM

Mostly, noise and looks. You won't really get better performance. You may get slightly better fuel economy, but only because your engine is ingesting hot air from under the hood. That's not really different from the stock system, though. In theory, the filter doesn't affect fuel economy anyway.

If I were going to do anything, I'd do a cold air intake. That would put the filter down near the fog light area, ingesting colder air from outside the car. There's a DIY on this forum about making your own cold air intake tube, while keeping the stock airbox. That's what I did. I have the stock filter in the stock airbox, but replaced the narrow-diameter fabric stock snorkel with 2" ABS pipe, that ingests air from down near the fog light. Works good; no water.

I have been lookin for a CAI but there are none that are specific for an 05 "S". I only find them for an 05-06 XRS but is there a difference as long as the pipe diameter is the same?

Look up in the sticky at the top of the forum. It has a list of all the DIYs.

You're looking for one for an 05-08 CE/S/LE model. You can even use one for an 03-04, with some modification. There's a DIY on 9th_gen_Corolla.com (without the "_") that shows you how to modify an 03-04 CAI to fit an 05-08.
