Hey Marc. The 9th gen XRS was only made for 2005, 2006 (most were 2005's). Just like any car, maintence records, accidents ect...
Some stuff to look out for:
Curbing: Check the wheels and side skirts for signs of curbing (rubbing on the curb) my XRS has noticable scratches on the passenger rear side skirt towards the rear tire. The rims have hit the curb a couple times as well and have scratches and dents. This was before I bought the car and I tend to stay a good 8-12 inches off the curb.
Serpentine belt: A squeeking noise coming from around the engine. Curable (tensioner adjustment usually), but annoying. Tell the dealer to fix it if you hear it when you start the 2ZZ-GE.
Interior Trim: The rubber around the rear drivers side door on my car seems to be too small. Not the rubber door seal, just the cosmetic wrap around stuff.
Engine 2ZZ-GE: Give it a good rev when on a test drive. Get it above lift; 6700rpm. This is really just for some fun, but the 2ZZ-GE engine is much more responsive over the normal eco 3000rpm shift point.
Gearbox C60: Test the gears, make sure they're good. My car crunches 3rd a little bit until it's warmed up (MT-90 is still working it's magic on it though!!!). You already have a 6-speed so getting it into 1st shouldn't be a problem (it was for me hahaha). The C60 is a close ratio gearbox so expect to shift it alot in the city, during eco driving.
If you need some pics of some of the cosmetic problem areas I can take some.
Packages: I don't know them for the US cars, sorry.
Newer is always better, but you can't go wrong with a low mile 2005.
The XRS is a fantastic car, and if you decide to pull the trigger, you'll have alot of fun.
I was under the impression that the XRS came from the factory fully-loaded with the exception of dealer installed accessories .
Phat, I know that the Canadian XRS's are fully loaded. But it looks like in the US you had to order some options: Moonroof, 6-disc CD, Power windows, Power door locks, maybe some more?
I'm pretty sure that even in the US, there were no "trim" packages on the XRS. There were some stand-alone options (like what's listed above). But I didn't know that you could get a manual window, manual lock XRS. I thought they were pretty well loaded also.

Exactly.
Look for:
- Clutch problems
- Transmission grinds
- Abnormal engine sounds (rattles etc.)
- A very rigid and tight steering ratio with wheels. If the steering shakes at highway speeds or feels very numb and lack of feel then the calibration is all messed up.
- Firm suspension that is very responsive in the corner (if it rolls too much in the corners then the shocks and springs are shot).
