Hi, I purchased a 2006 Toyota Corolla with 80k miles from a local dealer. In 2 months, i got engine Check light on with P2610 code. Dealer says the ECM has to be replaced and he'll do with an used one. He says I can drive around even if it is not replaced. Is it safe to drive around with P2610 code?
No, I would not drive around with it, it could crap out anytime, and if I were you, I would demand a new ECU, not a used one. What was the warranty with the car? It sucks because you are out of the emissions warranty.
I got it as second hand deal. He said it has 2 month/3000 miles warranty. Error came up during the end of warranty period. He's refusing to change a new one. What should i do?
I would guess it not the ECU. What is this code anyway? If it's not an ECU problem, then you paid for a service that you didn't receive. You may want to call mother Toyota.
if i were you i would contact an attorney. Best bet is to see if your family knows one and have him call the dealer and use some technical legal words. you'll get a new ecu in no time. If nto they are like $75 on ebay.

speaking of which, I bought my 2007 corolla last year and now it has 55k miles on it. I didnt buy it from a toyota dealership but off some used car lot -no extended warranties. I am getting this P2610 code too. So does that mean I can take it to any Toyota dealership to get it replaced because of the 8/80k emissions warranty? or am I out of luck since I have no extended warranty?
P2610 - ECM / PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance
DESCRIPTION
To ensure the accuracy of the EVAP (Evaporative Emission) monitor values, the soak timer, which is built
into the ECM, measures 5 hours (+- 15 minutes) from when the ignition switch is turned to OFF, before the
monitor is run. This allows the fuel to cool down, which stabilizes the Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP). When 5
hours have elapsed, the ECM turns on.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
5 hours after the ignition switch is turned to OFF, the soak timer activates the ECM to begin the EVAP
system monitor. While the engine is running, the ECM monitors the synchronization of the soak timer and
the CPU clock. If these two are not synchronized, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction, illuminates the
MIL and sets the DTC (2 trip detection logic).
Avoid driving the car as it can cause some serious damage. Have the dealer replace it with a new ECM and not a used one. I don't get why they would replace it with a used ECM as it can also crap out at anytime.

I had this code when I was 300 miles away from home when going 70 on the interstate. Engine just dropped back to idle and I coasted over to the side of the road. Turned off the engine, reset the code (I've got a ScanGauge) and started it up and drove home with no problems. I did have the ECM replaced under warranty (had about 20K at the time), I now have 89K on it and have had no problems.
I'm not advocating ignoring the code, but obviously one can drive just fine after the code is reset.

what is wrong with your dealer? replace with used one? is factory recall in 2006, don't take it man, as they keeping your new ecm and giving you an used one. then they can stock the new one to make money off other.
