2005 Corolla check engine light on

Hi Folks,
I have a 2005 Corolla with only 48000 miles, its check engine light is on for last few days, got checked from a toyota dealer and I am told i need to replace fuel filler neck and Gap cap. total estimate of over 700$.

do you have any experience or suggestions to bring this cost down. no way i can afford to get this fixed from the dealer.
its a certified car but I am told these parts are not covered

any pointers are appreciated

thanks
rishi

do you know the code for the CEL?

if not, is the CEL still on? if so, take it to autozone or something let them pull the code for you.

A new gas cap is cheap and may fix this problem. Any auto parts store will have one.

remove the gas cap and reinstall it. clear the code and drive for a few days and see if it comes back.

if it comes back, you can buy another gas cap and see if it fixes it.

those 2 are the cheapest way that might clear the p0455 code.

the p0441 code is the EVAP system malfunctioning. you can do checks yourself and repair it, but it does require some familiarity with the car.

http://www.obd-codes.com has some clear explanations on the OBD2 codes.

sry it took a while for me to reply. i'm out of town, so it's kinda hard to get a computer access.

We had a problem with the C.E.L. being on in our '06. I don't know what code it gave, but they said they had to replace the "charcoal canister". The dealer replaced the canister reset the light. The next day the light was back with the same code (also when the C.E.L. was on the AC did not work). They ended up replacing the computer, now all is well again!

I just bought a 2005 Xrs with a similar problem. The dealership changed out the cap, filler neck, charcoal, and what fixed it was a new gas tank. The top hose was dry rotted and not sealing the system. They told me they couldn't just swap out the hose because it is part of the tank. I didn't care it was all under warrenty.
