2007 Check Engine Light

I'm new here. My 24 year old daughter owns 2007 Corolla with about 70K miles, four cylinder auto. The check engine light came on last weekend on a trip from Chicago to Indianapolis.

I do not have the number, but AutoZone gave me this diagnosis:

Quote:
Oxygen sensor heater control circuit low - bank 1 sensor 1
Probable cause
1. - Open or short circuit condition
2. - Poor electrical connection
3. - Failed oxygen sensor
4. - EFI relay fault
I understand that this relates to the O2 sensor on the exhaust just to the side (rear) of the engine (the one I can see in the engine compartment, not the one farther back under the car). I visually checked the wires and all were connected and looked fine.

AutoZone said $200 for the O2 sensor.

I'm in Indianapolis and the car is an hour northwest of Chicago. But, the car is coming back in 10 days.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like P0031. The front 02 sensor that you saw is the Air fuel ratio sensor, that explains the high cost. It is the O2 sensor that mostly effects gas mileage. I recommend an denso or NGK sensor only (from a dealer or the like). It is very tempting to get a universal sensor, but I strongly suggest that you do not go that route if you were thinking about it. www.1sttoyotaparts.com has it for much cheaper than autozone, even with shipping, and can be shipped in under 3 days so you would have plenty of time.

Read the 3rd post down on this page:'03 Highlander P0135 Code

That explains how to remove sensor, and it can be quite difficult as it is subjected to very high heat.
