DIY: Replacing Engine Cover Plastic Retainers

I lost one of those plastic retainers that retain the rear side of the engine cover. So I replaced those silly things with the same small stud that's in the front left corner.

The part number for the "BOLT, STUD" is 92122-80612 (list $1.08 each) and the part number for the "NUT, CAP" is 90176-06028 (list $1.57 each). You'll need two of each.

It sounds expensive for what you get, but for 5 bucks, you can get rid of those silly plastic retainers forever. The stud is just long enough to poke up through the engine cover so that you can use the exact same 10mm nut that holds down the front side of the cover.

With that, could I just get rid of the engine cover altogether? I hate the look of them. Give me an old school four banger metal valve/IDI cover any day.

Yeah, you don't have to run the plastic engine cover. Just take the whole thing off.

It is more than just looks, it has noise canceling/insulating effects too besides helping to keep the top of the valve cover cleaner.

Yeah, but we got along without them until 2003, so why worry about it? Besides, I like the sound of an engine. I think the only exception is a diesel engine. Those are just rattly sounding.

Screw driver or pliers, likely they will break.

The two round hex head nuts/screws which held down the plastic engine cover on the top of my 05 engine came off easily when I used a hex nut style bold remover on a wrench. The left hand round head hex nut turned out to be a long screw. while the right side round head nut turned out to be just the nut itself. I also lost one of the plastic retaining things on the back of the plastic cover when I remove the cover to change out the serpentine belt. It fell behind the engine when I pulled the cover up and was never to be seen again. Ooops.
