Which AT trans line is the return line, NOW WITH PICS OF BOTH LINES

I have a Magnefine inline auto transmission filter I want to install on my 08' Corolla. I found the two rubber hoses coming from the radiator. One is at the top and one is near the bottom. Which one is the transmission cooler return line as this is where the filter has to go?

The rubber hoses your talking about is hoses for the coolant. As for the filter you drain the atf fluid first then remove the bolts from the transmission pan. The filter should be right there which is held by a few bolts.

This has your answers: 9th gen Transmission fluid exchange, observations and questions.

Would you mind taking pictures of how you do it? The Magnefine looks like a great idea. I pulled my tranny pan and cleaned the filter and pan. The bottom of the pan was coated in gray particles, it was pretty bad. The "filter" was caked too.

The two 3/8" rubber hoses, one on top and one on the bottom clearly say, AT fluid on them. Am I missing something here? The second picture is where the host on the first picture joins up with a solid line. That has to be the AT fluid.

You bet I will take some pics and post of this. I should get the Magefine in the mail by Wed/Thurs of next week and I'll install it on Friday. Looks pretty easy because they are rubber instead of having to cut into a hard line. I think the directions say to cut out 3.5" of hose and tap the inline filter right in with hose clamps. Would you elaborate as to how dropping the pan went? Haven't done that yet. I do hear from research that you must use the OEM gasket as aftermarket will not work correctly. Also, is there gasket material you have to scrape off, and if so, was it pretty simple to get it all off? Thanks!

I will look forward to the pics and to see what line you used. Dropping the pan was ok. There were 18 bolts, I removed them. The pan and gasket stuck to the mounting surface by the tightness of the bolts, not by sealer. I pulled it off gently. The magnets were caked too with metal fragments. I cleaned everything with brake cleaner. It was way to messy to take pics. I pulled the mesh screen and cleaned it too. I used the gasket from the dealer, pretty cheap, and applied it to the pan without gasket sealer. I carefully cleaned the mounting surface and stuck the pan up and secured the bolts. When I pulled the pan, about .5 qts were still in the pan, even though I drained it. It was a bit messy.

Thanks for the detailed response. It sounds like a relatively easy job, especially since you don't have to monkey around with putting adhesive on the gasket and what not. I'll have to go ahead and see if the dealer has these in stock. Often, they don't carry crap for parts because the car is so new (a 2008) or so they say and that you "don't have to change out ATF for at least 100,000 miles". I don't buy that one bit.

Yeah, the dealer told to me that the pan should not be dropped. I then asked him why they make a gasket for it if it does not have to be changed. He said I dont know and handed me the gasket.

Click here for a good picture of the transmission cooling system. The "lower" or passenger side line is the cooling return from the radiator.

My first post!
